Anyone use a catch can / cyclone filter?

I have been told by friends that own diesel 4wds to fit a catch can in my TDI 400 to stop oil fumes going into the egr and blocking it up as they have had it done. Is it a good idea or dangerous to the motor? I had a Hilux surf 2.4 litre diesel years ago and the intake was severely clogged with black gunk so was thinking about catch can. The catch can seems to open up a can of worms with pros and cons.

I think it is a good idea. Get one with a good filter and a drain at the bottom of the canister.

I would have done this but there is nowhere to fit it before the EGR.
I would also like one on the engine breather, that might be doable.
