It looks similar to a plunger from a disposable syringe.
That was my first thought, I have ones with a similar sized plunger for measuring out photo developer/stopper etc

Ah photography not really my thing!
No never did but I have seen similar since on syringes as suggested. No idea where it came from perhaps the Mrs is using the garage to ‘shoot up ‘

I use a syringe to take out hydraulic fluid from reservoirs when working on brakes - maybe someone had used one for that purpose at some point and left it to get mangled in the engine.
