…and so to accessories

Or rather, essentials. Hopefully picking up freshly converted T6.1 after a year of hand wringing, and at times reading obsessively on here!

I’m looking a few necessities initially…the choice is vast and was hoping to get the benefit of other users experience. We have gone for a Westdubs pop top and a Vulcan rock n roll bed, so initial wants are:

1. A topper / mat suitable for use in the pop top for a couple of kids and occasionally one adult + kid. Ideally I’d like it to stay up there but not sure what compromise that leads to comfort and not exactly how much thickness the west dubs allows?

2. A mattress topper for rock n roll bed. Obviously needs to be easily stowable…I’ve seen a silent night one for £35 that seems to pack away neatly. Supposed to be 10cm but not in reality.

3. Wedge cushions that mean you can sit back against the back doors (as I know our bed doesn’t have that option) Ideally these would be inflatable but not seen any that look great but have seen some solid cushion ones that look good…just aware that they’d take up storage space.

4. Porta potty- looking at Thetford 165…would want a box and cushion so it can be utilised as a footstool.

5. Awning with detachable sides (so it can be a simple canop) that fits vamoosh awning rail.

6. Large storage box that fits behind front seats as a general travel box that can be put in awning. I guess preferably one that can be secured to the seats somehow.

I think these are the must haves for now…got some ideas but there’s so much, it’d be helpful to hear about your best buys. I’ll post a couple of pics of the van when it’s handed over 😁

A few ideas. As you know there are hundreds of options - just check the search function.

3) We have a 3/4 mattress similar to https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15979377/berghaus-peak-compact-self-inflating-mat-15979377
It also acts as a bolster pillow at night and tucks behind the bed during the day.

5) Canopy with side panels

6) Euroboxes are tough and reasonably priced. However as we became more organised we now use standard folding crates.

If in doubt buy as little as possible, you can always buy as you go along.

Enjoy your van.

I would definitely hang off buying a canopy/awning until you’ve done a few trips in the van. They are a Marmite thing and after having 2 awnings, we gave up on them, not for us. Use the van, and then ask yourself if you need the extra space/hassle.
Ps that’s coming from a Marmite lover ;)

If you do opt for an awning I can highly recommend the Kampa / Dometic Cross Air - all three sides can be removed entirely so it can be used like a gazebo/sun shelter or you can buy one or two annexes that can zip into either side either for additional space/storage or bedrooms. It's one of the most versatile awnings I've used after having a few different types.
