Advice On Purchase Of Van To Then Convert.

Hi. New to this forum, don’t have a van to tell you about but we are looking to by a VW van to convert to a camper. We are hoping to get a newer van as possible and wondered if anyone had some good tips on where to go to get the best for your money. I have heard that there are better times of year and even differences in terms of wher in the uk you go depends on the deal.

We are prob looking at spending a decent amount on the actual conversion so ideally seeking a new or nearly new van.

If this is not the right forum then apologies. However, grateful for any advice and guidance.

Thanks.

It’s not wrong forum

Others will be along to advise I’m sure

Thanks Andy. I tried to post in the prospective buyers forum but it said I did not have sufficient privileges.

Hopefully someone can redirect.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, you will find you are in the right place for honest and helpful advice from a very knowledgeable bunch of folk.

Work out what you want and search everywhere. The VW commercial website sales is actually good to find a low mileage van to convert. Some say this is a good time to buy, just after a plate change where dealers may get old PCP vans back traded in for new models.

I purchased my 1 yr old Kombi with just 16miles on the clock that had been sat (pre registered) at the back of the dealers for a massive discount. So worth searching all sites.

Prices seem cheaper further north so don't limit your search on location as there are some deals further north. I am in Kent and bought mine in N Wales.

If you are used to dealing with car salesman and dealers, don't expect the same level of service from commercial dealers. They are years behind and are across the board pretty poor!

Good luck, and if in doubt ask the forum, oh and last final snippet of advice if you can find the right van for the right price and it has factory LED headlights .... Buy it.

(If you can push for free delivery even better

WRG to spec, start with LWB & go from there. The rest is down to the depth of your pockets.

Have a look at some of the bigger conversion companies, such as Hillside Leisure, to see if their layouts suit you as they can source new vehicles to whatever spec you want and most probably secure a better discount than you can.

I converted my own van so like you wanted a base van to start with, after many weeks of looking it became apparent that VW commercial are as cheap and sometimes cheaper than any aftermarket sales company.

Went to Birmingham for mine which was an hours drive and after doing a deal they said they would deliver it free of charge when it had been prepared for collection. I could then check it over on arrival at my house and pay the final balance if I was happy. Couldn’t have asked for anymore than that.

We got ours from VW Commercial Birmingham. Some of the dealers have relationships with the big converters to supply bulk orders of 1 year old vans for conversion.
