Acoustic wood panelling on the ceiling panel (Not Pop Top). Anyone done it?

I've used the TrePanel lite for my ceiling.

Bought a one piece ply panel for the roof which I attached with long panel clips.

I cut out the rear of the felt backing where the clips are so it sits flush, and I attached the felt to the wood with some short black 3mm screws which you van hardly see. Means it's all removable if I need access to the solar wiring.

Led strips are stuck to the wood and the panels cut to butt up against them.

I was testing a black diffuser on the right which is hardly visible when the light is off but doesn't seem to cut the light out when they are on.

The following is with both white diffusers

couple of questions for you, if you don't mind:

What thickness was the ply roof panel you used?
Where did you get the longer roof panel clips?

So is this the Trepanel light stuff? If so, have you got an off cut to take a photo of the profile from end on?

Asking as wondering if it’s the same stuff as I have seen someone else using that’s bonded the full length and the veneer section appear to be bonded to a raised foam section.

You have me convinced @CooseVW ! Looks absolutely fantastic. I didn’t think I was bothered about a light in the tailgate, but having since yours that is very unique, I love it!
I’m probably going to go down @ChestnutBrown route and go off starter battery and try to find a way of having a switch in the rear too. I do not know a thing about electrics in vehicles though. I’m not against spending money on a pro doing it, just it’s a pain to have someone else do half a job, stop so I can do my roof bit, then get him to finish the rest that’s all. Interested in what rechargeable light options you find.

I think it's totally doable how you want it...

From my understanding of how the interior light works, it has a permanent 12v supply (but on a timer so it won't flatten the battery). Then dependant on how you have the switch set on the interior light, it either has a permanent ground ('on' setting) or a switched ground ('doors open' setting) from the BCM.

I reckon if you picked up a supply from the fuse box to the LED's, via a switch, and utilised the existing brown wire at the interior light for the ground ('on' setting ground) that would do the trick.

All I would say is that you need the wiring sorting before you put the roof panels in as you're not running cables once it's installed!

It was this type of thing that I had in mind but not really had a solid look around for cooler options.

You could only have the lights on for ~ 10 minutes with the doors closed and then they would turn off.

My understanding is that the BCM cuts the voltage to prevent flattening your battery should you leave it on.

You can cycle the ignition and the timer starts again but I found that quite annoying when I was trying to enjoy my fish and chips 🤣
