Being the happy owner of the dreaded CXEB 204 PS, I’ve always had the nagging doubt in my head about the EGR cooler failure at around the 70k mile mark. Mine’s done 68k, so as a pre-emptive measure I asked VW for a price to swap the EGR/Cooler assembly. VW came back with coppers short of £2k. I asked my trusted local Indy for a price and he quoted £1300 with OEM parts, so last Wednesday, in she went. Apparently it’s a b4stard of a job and took a good day to do, but I now have the van back and after a couple of blasts up& down the M1 I’m happy. Dunno if it’s my imagination, but the van also seems much quieter.
Anyway you might ask, what of the old EGR/Cooler, was it shagged or have I wasted a good £1300? I’ve just had an hour in the shed playing with the old valve, I had to make a plug for one of the cooling water ports in order to get the pressure tester rigged up to the inlet port. I’ll let you judge if it was money well spent by looking at the pics. I pressurised the cooler to 1bar, around 15psi, I’m not sure what the actual working pressure is, but it seemed about right.
