204bhp BiTurbo DSG 4Motion.

Camperbility

New Member
Hi folks. Just general advice please. Brought a nearly new T6.1 T30, 204bhp DSG campervan last year, first registered Sept '24. Booked in for first service this Sept. I intend to have the Haldex fluid and the transmission oil changed at the same time. It will have only done about 20k miles by that time. I'm not sure what treatment the van had for the first 15k miles, so just being cautionary. I have read in these pages of the troubles that members have had with BiTurbo engines and the horrific replacement costs, which I would prefer to avoid. Therefore, is there anything I should also have done at the same time.
My first experience with any VW product, are they really so delicate? Nearly all my working life I owned Transits, always fully laden, V4 petrol, straight 4 petrols, diesels, probably about 1.5million miles, worst problem in 40 years, one broken valve spring, it dropped the valve, no damage, sorted myself next day. Plus two clutches, one DMF. One van did 250k miles and was still ok when sold. What is going on with VW?

Appreciate any recommendations.

The Transits we use to run at work usually rotted away before they had a chance to break down.

As Ali-G said the latest 204 bhp engine from 2021 is not affected, although maybe too early to say but there has to be some high mileage engines out there now that may be a testament to this

Personally (bearing in mind I look after my van fastidiously) I wouldn't worry about the DSG and Haldex oil change. They are self contained & self controlled and are very limited in how they can be abused, if at all. The recommended oil change interval for both is 40k miles. The flip side to that is don't scrimp on the engine oil. Don't be seduced by the extended service interval nonsense, change the engine oil with genuine VW oil every 10k miles as a maximum, I do mine around 6-8k miles.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the input, feeling more reassured now. I'll get the engine oil changed at a VW workshop before we set off for Scotland in June, we are going to attempt the NC500.

if you have a trusted local independent garage, there's no reason that they can't do the oil/filter change using genuine parts. no need to be ripped off pay VW dealer premium

My thinking was that if I use VW garage it will be recorded in the van’s history. I could do it myself, although I haven’t located the filter yet. Abroad at present, so can’t look until we get back.

Most good independent specialists should be able to do that.
I get my Golf serviced at a local independent who aren't even a VW specialist and they always update the official service history.

Just ask the indy garage for an invoice with the vehicle reg/mileage and work carried out and keep it with the rest of the van paperwork. That's all I do.
