Yes you need a leisure battery to effectively run a diesel heater.. As above it will run off the starter but 100% you will kill the starter battery and then up with a flat battery.... Unless that is you planning on doing a 2-hour drive every single day.

how long is a few weeks???? if the starter battery is exhausted in 2 weeks or so, then you would be better off putting a new starter battery on it.

You could wire in a manual switch to stop it charging the leisure battery.

Quite possible, the time of alarm, starter battery shows in shunt at 14.9v I have now set a high voltage alarm in the shunt at 15v for both starter and leisure batteries and will see if they tally up.
