I’d definitely recommend going lifepo4 and looking at a 100ah size, which will be approximately the physical size of your existing battery. Does what you have already work for you or are you short of power? What’s your typical usage?
I find my 105ah Fogstar Drift is essentially self sustaining...
Don’t get disheartened, I’m sure it’s just a setup issue. I’d check for any software updates & then do a factory reset to default & start again. A multimeter across the input/output terminals with the engine on/off
And see what the results are.
If you're a smart alternator van you'll get a lot more benefit out of replacing the relay with a DC-DC, that really impacts your charging whereas there are other ways of solving topping up the starter.
My point about the Amber Valley is that the terminals and wires will be different to what...
Ah - sure!
This is a Swedish 2015 5.1 Multivan with a factory installed parking heater - Webasto Thermo Top C according to label.
There was also a factory installed leisure battery under the drivers seat with relay separation, but this is now replaced with a Lithium 150Ah battery and a Victron...
You need to identify the ignition wire with your multimeter to make sure you have the right one. It should be fuse at the end furthest from the DC-DC to protect the cable in case of a short. Sorry, I didn’t mean to link to LED switches, I’d just get simple non-led ones which go in-line with...
Ah ok thanks.
Does it matter if the car battery is lead acid?
Can you use the same DC to DC charger to charge from the mains when on the mains?
Thanks,
Ollie
Mine isn't the neatest install but you'd be amazed what you can fit, with a bit of planning...
Fogstar 230Ah LiFePO4 battery
Orion XS 50a DC-DC
100/20 MPPT
Smart shunt
Cerbo GX
2x fuse boxes
2x isolator switches
That's all under the passenger seat.
Under my driver's seat is the 15a 240v...
Hi all, so my next project for the van is to install all the electrics. I bought the kit from Rayne Automotive and under my drivers seat I plan to have;
AGM 110 Leisure Battery
VictronOrion DC to DC Charger
Victron MPPT controller
Victron Battery Protect
And the positive and negative bus bars...
It's just due to the long length of cable between the starter battery and under the passenger seat, you're looking at a few metres, and with the DC-DC bring connected to both the SB and LB you've got 2 sources of potential power if that cable is short circuited.
If you did change your mind on...
The fridge should run from the leisure battery and not the starter. Use the Victron app for your OrionDC-DC charger and make sure that the settings are disconnecting the starter battery when the engine is not running.
I have Victrondc-dc & MppT. The dc-dc (Orion) does run hot on full chat. But I have Lithium, so the Orion runs on full output initially. It soon drops away as the battery charges. It’s under the passenger seat, mounted on an aluminium plate. No fan required & silent. The MPPT is mounted at the...
@Richard85 I’ve just done similar with the same battery and DC-DC but with a few extra bit. Things to note:
The battery will need to go on its side under the seat.
It is very tight to get the DC-DC in there too and also give it room for ventilation. Do you have a seat swivel? If so that may...
Hi, I would be very grateful for feedback on my proposed refresh of the leisure battery system on my 2013 T5.1. Current set up is an 8 year old Travelvolts SCR with the addition of a 150w Solar panel on pop top. Van is currently used for weekends and weeks away using hookup. I am planning to...
I’d have a think of what power you need and your usage as it’s all too easy to get carried away and have kit that is massive overkill. The 18a Orion is absolutely fine for a 105ah battery. The XS is clearly more powerful so would charge much faster (but you would need to reduce its output to 30a...
Simon huge thanks for this, it’s adding real value to my design. So with your IP65 have you wired that directly into the EHU connection, as they come with a mains plug attachment?
And then you use your Renogy as the inverter attached to seat base. Do all renogys have a mains plug socket on the...
What do I think? I think for another £20 I’d get the tried & trusted Orion, that’s what I think.
VictronOrion Smart 30A 12V DC to DC charger with Bluetooth connectivity https://amzn.eu/d/9D9fyxF
Hi @Dellmassive I have based my solar and leisure battery set based on you very informative diagram and advice. So many thanks for this.
Here is what i have:
Just a couple of questions before I start the installation if you don't mind please:
Do I need to install a PV isolator? - when would...
