Not absolutely necessary, you can use the engine running detection feature, I tried it and wasn’t happy with the functionality, it was a bit of an unknown quantity. So I went down the ignition live route and am happier for it.

Plug something into the socket and see if it goes off when you turn the ignition off. If it is a Dashcam with parking mode you may need two feeds to use all the features - one to constant live and one to live when ignition on - otherwise it won’t know to switch mode. Hardwire kits are not too...
