The calipers are zinc coated, maybe metal sprayed. I found a piston dust seal to be slightly displaced allowing water under, this had allowed the caliper to rust very slightly and set up corrosion on the piston wall. Fixed with a seal / piston overhaul kit. Regular checks for freely rotating...

Yep concur, no huge ground plane on a boat so lots of negative wires. Lets not get into the need for anodes (lumps of zinc bolted to hull) lol.

You can bond in a new metal plate behind the holes. The zinc primer, fill and paint as per normal. But you will definitely need a plate at the rear to support any top filler..... Or it will crack and possibly fall out. Bodyshop welded plate plus fill and spray is other option.

Turns out it’s not silver, there is an extra layer with zinc pyrithione and tetradecyl diammonium silane. So not only will it reduce mould growth, it will also prevent dandruff!
