So got a hefty quote for a few things on the van whilst in for MOT and service. Mainly for the DMF but might as well do as much as possible whilst it's all off.
An unforeseen cost is there's an oil leak at the crank seal. The mechanic says he'll need to take the timing belt off to replace it...
Hi there, have you checked your brake fluid reservoir level? Looks like the slave cylinder inside the gearbox is leaking. Or rear crank oilseal. It would be a suprise with such low mileage.
2 x 1L 5W-30 VW engine oil.
One of the bottles has been opened and a little oil used. The other is sealed.
Now the van is gone this is just sat in my garage so £20 posted to uk mainland.
Nothing can be done, but the seals have been revised and the replacement will last longer.... Hopefully. (Regular driving and oil changes would help if assume)
It's a plastic part, there are some ideas about how they start leaking, but ultimately it's a rubber shaft seal that wears and starts...
...leakage under running conditions (common failure point at
this mileage)
2 Turbocharger centre housing for external oil leak
3 Turbo internal oilseal condition – remove lower intercooler hose and check for excessive oil pooling
(small oil film = normal; significant pooled oil = possible...
Hi all,
Just in the middle of replacing the crank shaft oilseal whilst doing the timing belt. I was hoping to do the oil pump belt at the same time assuming I could remove the sump. Unfortunately it looks like the most ridiculous design in that you can't get the sump off on my model without...
Not unusual for people to use an oil additive to increase viscosity if a crankshaft seal is leaking. Happened to a friend of mine with a Land Rover Discovery, I had the pleasure of watching the private seller make the bank transfer for the repair cost with a damp stain in his trousers.
It seems to be oil. I've got a new rocker cover, along with washers, seals etc to fit - it's minor enough for now that I'm waiting a few weeks until I have more time to roll my sleeves up again.
Not questioning you’re mechanics diagnosis but it’s almost unheard of for the gearbox seal to leak, far more likely the crankshaft seal. Engine oil and gear oil do not smell the same, engine oil will most likely be black due to carbon loading.
...5 year / 80,000 mile warranty.
It went in for a service and MOT last week and it's noted in the health check of 'Misting from front main oilseal', having had a search I am concerned this could turn into a bigger problem. Should I be pushing them to fix under warranty? I had seen somewhere...
As I see.. Interesting.. What can be done to prevent such the oil leaking in the future? Any stronger seal? Different oil type? Warming up the engine before start by webasto?
I suspect the VW Accountants drive the Buyers to purchase the cheapest that meets specification at the time.
It may not be the seal that’s failing at the free end, more likely the unstable plastic housing that causes the seal to pass oil.
So the oil I found is definitely cleaner than engine oil and coming from the bellhousing with the flywheel in.
We have gone ahead and removed the box, there is a small weep of oil from the seal around the shaft.
Now I need to decide what to do, I could just change the seal and put it back...
Currently getting price for cam belt. Whilst at it asked for quote to include oilseal and aux belt, all in with water pump etc.
So far, indy, £1000, nice round number!
...camp.
It’s now covered in oil on the offside below the timing belt cover.
In at the garage today for timing belt, water pump, crank pulley oilseal and a full service.
Had a phone call to say that the oil leak is above the oilseal and without stripping more stuff off it’s hard to tell where...
Does look like the cranks seal but never seen one leak as bad as that before. Please let us know what the outcome is.
I would get the auxiliary belt changed too as that looks to be contaminated with oil.
