Why I hate transits

Slightly more I’m afraid I’m suspecting hole in piston
caused by? . . . cam belt snapped? . jumped?/valve damage . . ingested turbo fan blade?, inlet runner flap? (clutching at straws here . . . . )

Timing chain so not belt , timing is correct turbo all fine the culprit seems to be in my opinion dribbling injector

so hydraulic lock from diesel in cylinder?

I guess unburnt fuel creating wet carbon build up and gradually burns through the crown.

Could be worse, imagine if you owned it.
Yep, that's not going to be a small bill.
I hope it's a warranty job but I suspect not.
A mate of mine had a nearly new Transit go bang about a year ago, 5 months old 5K miles on it. Engine replaced under warranty, Ford wouldn't tell him any details of what caused it except, "It's got a new engine, that's all you need to know!"
I have to say, the build quality was otherwise good and it drives very nicely. It's just not a T6!
