Quick family weekend away to North Wales. Set off Friday afternoon anticipating around 1 hour 30 min to get to Conway, but crawling traffic in far too many places added an extra hour. Waze navigation did its best, diverting us off the expected route here and there to avoid the worst holdups, culminating in the final 10 miles or so being a tour of the best Welsh single track roads. Which was fine until a huge tractor pulling an even bigger trailer came round a bend straight towards us. He stopped, we stopped and looked at each other, but fortunately we had a good few cars following behind us so I couldn't reverse unless they all did so first. The tractor driver gave in and performed the finest bit of reversing with a trailer I have seen in years, thus allowing us to continue onward.
Eventually we reached our intended destination, Conwy Holiday Park. Lovely site, they have a huge place mainly filled with permanent lodge homes, but these are very well screened from the tourer areas, with pitches arranged in small groups separated by trees and bushes giving it a cosy small park ambience. I was getting a bit worried as our arrival time stretched out to beyond 8pm, but there was no difficulty gaining access. The information they sent us in advance included our assigned pitch details and an eight digit number to key into the gate barrier. Didn't need to have any contact with staff on arrival at all. Route to the pitch was well signposted within the park and we soon found ourselves parked adjacent to our daughter's campervan.
Site facilities were excellent, roads very smooth, there was a brand-new toilet/shower/washingup block a very short walk away and what looked like an equally new on-site pub/bistro with indoor children's play area a slightly longer walk away. There were also decent outdoor play areas, and something we haven't seen elsewhere, a dog agility course with obstacles of all types laid out which was thoroughly tested by our daughter's labrador.
A walk into Conwy town was just over 1 mile, downhill. We walked via the main road most of the way and don't recommend it due to no verges, many tight bends and lots of fast traffic. Coming back later after a nice lunch we found an alternative route along a little-used back road which led to a public footpath through fields. Uphill. Very uphill. A visit to the aforementioned pub/bistro was needed on our return, followed later by much barbecuing of belly pork, homemade burgers, ribs and Welsh Dragon sausages (leek and chilli...).
Coming back home this morning was much better on the roads and the journey was completed within the expected time frame. As usual after one of these short trips we got the full "where the hell have you been?" treatment from the cat. Don't know why she complains, she has the house to herself, plenty of dry food, water and dreamies and a machine that opens a fresh chilled plate of Whiskas for her each afternoon. Full access to the outside world too via her electronic catflap. Some people are never satisfied...
