Where Have You Been In Your Van Today?

Quick family weekend away to North Wales. Set off Friday afternoon anticipating around 1 hour 30 min to get to Conway, but crawling traffic in far too many places added an extra hour. Waze navigation did its best, diverting us off the expected route here and there to avoid the worst holdups, culminating in the final 10 miles or so being a tour of the best Welsh single track roads. Which was fine until a huge tractor pulling an even bigger trailer came round a bend straight towards us. He stopped, we stopped and looked at each other, but fortunately we had a good few cars following behind us so I couldn't reverse unless they all did so first. The tractor driver gave in and performed the finest bit of reversing with a trailer I have seen in years, thus allowing us to continue onward.

Eventually we reached our intended destination, Conwy Holiday Park. Lovely site, they have a huge place mainly filled with permanent lodge homes, but these are very well screened from the tourer areas, with pitches arranged in small groups separated by trees and bushes giving it a cosy small park ambience. I was getting a bit worried as our arrival time stretched out to beyond 8pm, but there was no difficulty gaining access. The information they sent us in advance included our assigned pitch details and an eight digit number to key into the gate barrier. Didn't need to have any contact with staff on arrival at all. Route to the pitch was well signposted within the park and we soon found ourselves parked adjacent to our daughter's campervan.

Site facilities were excellent, roads very smooth, there was a brand-new toilet/shower/washingup block a very short walk away and what looked like an equally new on-site pub/bistro with indoor children's play area a slightly longer walk away. There were also decent outdoor play areas, and something we haven't seen elsewhere, a dog agility course with obstacles of all types laid out which was thoroughly tested by our daughter's labrador.

A walk into Conwy town was just over 1 mile, downhill. We walked via the main road most of the way and don't recommend it due to no verges, many tight bends and lots of fast traffic. Coming back later after a nice lunch we found an alternative route along a little-used back road which led to a public footpath through fields. Uphill. Very uphill. A visit to the aforementioned pub/bistro was needed on our return, followed later by much barbecuing of belly pork, homemade burgers, ribs and Welsh Dragon sausages (leek and chilli...).

Coming back home this morning was much better on the roads and the journey was completed within the expected time frame. As usual after one of these short trips we got the full "where the hell have you been?" treatment from the cat. Don't know why she complains, she has the house to herself, plenty of dry food, water and dreamies and a machine that opens a fresh chilled plate of Whiskas for her each afternoon. Full access to the outside world too via her electronic catflap. Some people are never satisfied...

Love Stonehaven. We were there last week. Love the beer and food at the Marine Hotel at the harbour (6.N brewing).
Also the butchers in the square has some amazing steak kebabs and burgers. Brought a load home last week. Worth a visit.

Site sounds good, have added it to my bookmarks
We came back from Anglesey on Wednesday. Traffic was good. Lucky we/you weren't traveling Thursday. No doubt the tunnel fire was still having an effect on the traffic on Friday Conwy Tunnel fully reopens after major incident fire

In attempt to make a break for cooler weather, we did the 4 hour/400km run north(ish) to Sarlat but it's still bleeding hot, albeit early rather than late 30s. We're having a couple of days here and will explore the town tonight and tomorrow before heading further in the rough direction of Montreuii sur Mer and then Calais. The current pitch is at Camping Huttopia Sarlat which is only about a 10 minute stroll to the medieval city down a steep hill [I think] so probably twice that coming back. Although ,mostly levelled, the pitches are all along tracks which they seem to have cut out of the sides of a valley and there's some pretty steep bits to drive up for some of them. Ours is OK though being quite long and just wide enough to park the van with enough space by the for us to sit out with some shade so not bothered to deploy the awning yet.

On the way to another remote campsite, 20k of crazy tracks from the tarmac, also drove down the F 249, decided to not cross the last two big river crossings.View attachment 293056View attachment 293058
Very jealous. It’s an amazing place isn’t it. We passed through that area on mountain bikes a few years ago heading south to Skogafoss. We had to wade many of the rivers which was ‘interesting’ to say the least! Pic taken a bit further east beyond Thorsmork:

If you have time it’s worth a trip round to Landmannalaugar. Pretty sure it will be all passable except possibly a river crossing close to the visitor centre. Seem to remember there is parking before the crossing if needed.

Have fun and keep the pics coming please.

Spent last night at Les Vergers de la Gentilhommiere at Osmoy St Valery on the D1 between Dieppe and Neufchatel, they produce cider, Calvados and their own Lentils, it’s the usual deal you buy a few bottles and you can stay over for free, electric is available for €5, oh and access to a toilet, which is good because only No1’s are allowed in our van

We have been here 6 weeks now - our favourite place in Beaumes-de-Venise in the Vaucluse. If you like cycling this area is fantastic. Mid 30's temperature wise so hot, but not OMG hot. Secret weapon just to the back of the roof.

Quite a few of these little chaps/chappesses. Jumping spiders but with really chunky front legs that makes them look as if they have been working out. You can just imagine them saying "Did you spill my pint?"..
Just around the corner from you in Aubignan mate !

Ah - the Via Venaissia! Seems to get extended each year - decent upgrade to roads from L'isle sur la Sorgue and then leading onto the old railway at Velleron. Shame it's so carp going through Carpentras. Presumably you are familiar with Bistro La Gare at Loriol du Comtat - a real favourite of ours.

Yes, been there a couple of times now for lunch and very nice it is. Are you staying for Le Tour? Stage 16 goes through Sarrians, Aubignan and Caromb before the usual climb to Mont Ventoux via Bedoin. Noticed the fresh tarmac on the roads.

Today’s 70 km route, the F 208, had about a dozen river crossings, one gave us a squeaky bum moment, a deep dip near the exit, only passed a handful of vehicles on our route in 3 hours , most go the easier way.
Diff lock and hill decent pressed a few times too.
Saw a duster get bogged down leaving the campsite, it’s the only way in and out, and it’s raining tonight….
The mountain rescue have some serious kit out here

Yup - got the kids coming out to witness that. I see that the main road through Bedoin is closed ATM, presumably for resurfacing. Shame tour doesn't go through centre of Caromb, as that could really do with improvement:(
