What/how does regeneration work?

What's it like when the engine and exhaust is up to normal running temp?

Does the smoke disappear?

Yup, took for a longer drive this afternoon after 4-5 mins smoking had stopped. I'll keep an eye on it but for now I think I'll put it down to combo of short journeys and condensation. Checked for codes, no stored errors and no recent regen.

Yeh. If it disappears when up to temp it may be residual in the exhaust.

I’ve had my T6 for about 6 months and done 5k miles and not noticed a DPF regen - I assume it just cracks on with it whilst on the motorway so you wouldn’t notice it? Not had to put any ad blue in either so I believe that the previous owner did the ad blue delete (though he claims to not even know it was an ad blue engine)

Get a carista Dongle, and vag dpf.

Regen signs will include, raised revs from 850 to around 9:50 or just under a thousand RPM.

Slight burning smell from outside that comes from the exhaust being very hot.

Fans running after engine off chaos if you are midway through a regen, to keep air flowing over the DPF to cool it down.

On a full tank of diesel I will get two regens as regular as clockwork normally at the 1/3 and 2/3 tank levels... Which is around 130 mile Mark.

It won't regen below a quarter of a tank or when the low diesel light is on..

I always fill up from fall empty zero miles ish up to 100% full

Couple of additions.

Mine regens after about 160 miles normal use. Longer if extended run on the motorway. I notice it on the motorways as the fuel consumption in the DIS drops about 5 mpg.

It will regen below 1/4 of a tank. It even starts in the red zone with the fuel light on.

So if it regens on the motorway I’m unlikely to know that it’s doing it unless I notice the MPG figure drop. I’ll look at getting a carista and DPF thing - does that need a monthly subscription?

I paid £7.49 for the full fat VAG DPF app. Carista is subscription based, but there are deals from time to time. Well worth it though for both.

I brought a odb2 dongle from a company in Poland. It has a little led which illuminates when the dpf starts it's regeneration thing. You can also press a little button and it will count out the number of grams of soot in your filter. It's a handy device as you know when you are regenerating and can drive the long way round until it concludes instead of shutting the engine down and risking oil dilution issues.

When im within a mile or so of my destination I make a note of the idle speed when I stop at a junction. It's pretty easy to spot the high idle. If the road is clear you dan efen declutch for a couple of seconds on the move and see what the idle speed is doing, and you can do that without slowing down and causing carnage.
