What Have You Bought Today?

Not bought today but testing this weekend, stitches + steel expanding aluminium awning poles. Initially I thought they were great but it’s a bit blowy where we are camping and they keep getting pushed down by the wind, so pretty useless really

Although I may look to sell them shortly so what I mean is they are great!!!

They have allowed me to set the awning up so it just sloping from the door which is exactly what I hoped to do and something I couldn’t do with the standard awning poles. But this configuration is best for when the weather is a bit inclement so if they can’t stand up to the wind it’s a shame. Having said that we are getting stormy winds directly off the sea so I guess they would be fine in 90% of applicationsIMG_6743.jpeg
Swapped the front and rear poles round now to see if it’s just the front pole that’s faulty or whether it’s just that one that keeps going as it’s getting the brunt of the weather. They appear so much sturdier than the piddly pole that I had before

The swmbo a new to her Kia sportage after I mistakenly pulled the Bonnet release handle instead of the filler cap opening lever whilst I filled her old car with diesel.
Now in my defence it shares a similar location to where the filler cap release is on my old ranger pick up.
Who knew you could find this out in the fast lane of the M27 at 70mph. This has been a very, very, very expensive mistake. Oh my days!!!!

And presumably a new set of underpants as well.

Wow, have the bonnet actuators just let go? Should be an easy repair.
Well that’s what I thought. The force of the bonnet opening at considerable speed cause the hinges to pull the bulk head mounting area out and also damaging the bottom of both a pillars. Body shop quoted even with me supplying all the bits over £2k. It’s a 100k miles 13 plate Kia. And it would have to be set as a cat s after repair. Just not worth the effort to do. Swmbo has a newer nicer car now and I have less numbers on my bank balance because I’m an idiot.

Wow, just goes to show how powerful forced air is and how flimsy new cars actually are. Easy mistake to make. Main thing is you are all okay and no one was hurt.

Yes it could have been soooo much worse. Very lucky indeed even had a nice policeman promptly pull in behind us as we nearly made it off the motorway and lend me a crow bar to make some fine tolerance adjustment to the now not so hingey hinges.

Not good, had it happen years ago on a customers old Renault Laguna. Hit 40mph and up she went. Luckily we got away with only a bonnet. What was very annoying was the fact I'd only done the rear wheel bearing and not been under the bonnet. Turns out the customer had been fiddling with the catch.

Anyway, out of curiosity is the bonnet safety catch seized?? That in theory is designed to stop this happening. Worth checking on this car and all future cars.

I must admit I was surprised it happened. I had previously sprayed some WD 40 on the catch probably last year somewhen. I regularly checked oil, water and topped up screen wash it always opened and closed normally.
