Vinyl Record Storage Cabinets - Recommendations.

So…. For my burgeoning record collection, I’m finally going to buy myself a ‘proper’ storage cabinet. At the moment I have two G Plan sideboards in my ‘retro man cave’ with wine/champagne cases on the top that I store the records in, and also in the cupboards, housing my nearing 450 LP’s and 70 odd 12” Singles. But I’m nearing capacity. Gonna get rid of one of the sideboards and was thinking of this from Lagom Studio who get great reviews. I also oggle over their products on IG.

Question is, has anyone by chance bought one of their products and can give an honest recommend (finding stockist at under 75 miles to go and view is proving difficult) or………any similar style alternatives. I’m after a ‘bespoke bookcase’ style and NOT interested really in the IKEA Kallax that I know is quite a common go to. (In fact used one for a while when collection was much smaller). Just promised myself a solid wood affair to store my obsession.

As my wife says “you used to buy records, then you collected them, now you simply accumulate them🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️”.

Answers on a post card.

Thanks.

I use an Ikea cubes the particular versions have 8 cubes, that is 2 by 4 cubes each. The LP size records sit upright in order. Never used singles

I have been keen on Hi-Fi since sometime in the 1970'sbut was only in the 80's when I took a more serious interest. Beginning to find getting up and down to change a record a little wearisome of late and the same for SACD/CD also though they play longer. More recently listening to internet radio around the world but mainly the USA and Linn records have a few stations also that I enjoy. I bought a cheap £170 Internet Radio from a tip in Hi-fi News and frankly I am blown away by its quality even though it is only at 320kb/s Have been considering a DAC/Streamer possibly with library but not quite sure what manufacturer might wait and see what Michi bring out but unsure when that might be. Years ago I used FM Radio but it was taken out by a lightning storm.

To answer @Kind of Blue, yeah I’ve got a cracking streamer too. (Digital music deffo has its place, but I just love the sound/feel/emotion of vinyl.) Obviously an infinite choice of streamed music to listen to. But the trouble is I end up finding new bands and artists and go chasing them on vinyl. Many is the time at 2 AM I’ve gone down a big dark hole after listening for 6 hours to people I’d never heard of, now with a massive list of new records I want.

And that is why “we’re gonna need a bigger boat !” Hence the OP. 😊

Another vote for IKEA. Super solid, can be customised easily, good price (save money for vinyl!). I have about 5000 records and they do me proud.

The sort of furniture that you are looking at has a premium price but is it any better suited than something from any other furniture outlet like Ikea or any where else. If something is made for the Hi-fi world they the price is automatically more expensive by some margin yet is it any better. You could try having a bespoke thing made for you by a carpenter and it would be very special. You just give the basic requirements and he or she does the rest. they might be able to fit them into places that standard shelving does not match. Perhaps he could make something for your wife or house that has a theme. Just a thought. You could try it your self if you have time. A material that I like is not very aesthetic unless one likes pure functionality is Key-clamp tubing.

Key-clamp tube bore comes in various sizes and can be steel, aluminium or plastic of some sort. What makes it special is the huge array of joints available and other fittings for things like shelves. Many years ago I made something for an ex military vehicle a door mounted wheel carrier huge really heavy tyres and it was hinged in such away to allow for geometry change between bracket and door. The problem is where I live. I or we rather own a remote Welsh small holding no proper road to the house it is all off road. Only 2 delivery sources manage to find the entrance to our property for a roadside drop off one is royal Mail and the other is Amazon nether do what most manufacturers send and we have a huge problem the getting deliveries many parcels just do not arrive. It is the delivery services they lie and often do not even come within miles of our property we do everything to make it easy for the, meet on the roadside the 3 word drop zone you name it we have done it so many plans are frustrated so often I do not develop something. There are some companies that develop Key-clamp designs or build to ones own specification and design. One of the things that I fancy having is a stand made to accommodate the Hi-fi equipment Amps SACD Multiplayer Tuner and streamer ect and with the record player at the top possibly even a tall tv stand because TV Radio Hi-fi is all linked and all comes out of one pair of PMC MB, that is Mid Box speakers. I am listening to Jazz on Lin records radio at the moment while I write. I recoin that I could build a stand at lest as good as some very expensive kit at the fraction of the price, it is just settling final design the size, number of shelves and but main thing is delivery. I guess I could just buy more than I would need in steel but fancy Al or plastic so no magnetic field all the tubing could have sand or lead loading. No where near sell the stuff guess I could drive to somewhere that does anyway that is something else I even have a plan to build speaker stands that would allow for varying the height and possibly enveloping the whole speaker for transport without needing to do too much. The PMC MB speakers are quite large and weigh about 50kg each.

By the way the other thing about that cheap internet radio is that I have no problems with receiving stations in the US or here when some radio gear even many radios attached to very expensive streamers is denied connection due to arguments about royalties and licence etc

Thanks for reply and all interesting stuff. Totally get I could get the whole IKEA thing. I’ve got a Kalkax here in my office for all my books and manuals and sat at my IKEA desk and chair, so had its place. But…. I just wanted a ‘really nice’ piece of ‘Furniture’ I guess. Been looking for a G Plan style library bookcase for ages that I can utilise/adapt, but haven’t found one yet, hence my OP.
Might well re-consider a local carpenter/kitchen/furniture maker to have a try.

Suppose just after any specific recommendation or someone who had bought the Lagom Studio. (Bit of a long shot but you never know).

👍👍

I did a load of searching a few months ago and ended up on the Lagom Studio stuff like you. Looks to be a great option at a reasonable price compared to some of the other options. I didn’t get anything at the time so really interested to see if anyone has any feedback.

Just a little curious about your Hi-fi and music interests. Very few on here perhaps one or two or three now but years ago more people where more interested in quality of sound and selection but that appears to have been supplanted these days by quantity and bugger the quality. and mostly just pop and noise. Though some Hi-fi magazines seem to have a tendency to go to extremes with equipment cost with pages of stuff, that someone might us as a decent house deposit and certainly purchase a more than decent vehicle. So it is just pleasant to here from someone other than ones self interested in that sort of thing!:)

I agree @Kind of Blue. For convenience now a lot of people perhaps don’t really ‘listen’ to music, but ‘have it on’, due to the ease of smart speakers blah blah. Or listen purely to tinny little ear buds.
Always been into my ‘sounds’ from my Teens.

If you’re interested, system now comprises. I

Heavily modified Technics 1210 by ‘Inspire HiFi’. Like this.

Naim Supernait 2 Integrated Amp but running with external ‘Teddy Pardo’ Power Supply.
Teddy Pardo DAC.
Leema Acoustics Phono Stage with Teddy Pardo P/S. (ditched the usual supplied plug in ‘wall wart’ power adapter).
BlueNode 2i Streamer using the Tidal High Res platform as my go to streaming service.
Harbeth XD HL-7ES -3 speakers.

Yes, it’s an expense, perhaps a bit ‘geeky’ but system was built over time. (I’ve had the T/T 10 years as an example) and has, and continues to give me joy every week.

I guess if that’s your ‘thing’ why not. Some of my mates spend a fortune on Premiership Season Tickets and Carbon Fibre Carp fishing rods. So please don’t judge me 🤦‍♂️🤣🤣

Going back to first point, some of our friends mid 20,s kids listen to it and go ‘wow, that sounds amazing’. I reply ‘well yes, and thanks, but that’s what it’s supposed to sound like’. Unfortunately they’ve been conditioned to ‘white buds, and an Alexa’.

Yours is a very good system not heard of the Blue Node Streamer before that is a new one on me! Naim was the thing early 80,s along with Lynn but have not heard a Naim set up for a very long time, Leema I know about and have heard some of their amps in the past very good but not heard the Leema Phono amp I should imagine it sounds exceptionally good.

My First system was blown up by a very heavy thunder and lightning storm some years ago. It was so bad my wife was blown from her feet away from the electrical fuses and meters, she was uninjured but concussed and very shaken I was out with the dogs and saw lightning strike very close to where I was up a hill above the property and our 2 Irish Wolf Hounds fled in different directions. I also saw a strike very close if not actually on the house. The strike near to me was blinding yellow, closest I have been to one only 20 to 50 metres very visceral hard too say maybe further away extremely powerful incredible noise and very heavy wind immediately after. The only surviving HiFi was a Lynn Sondek LP12 with Ittock Arm, lost amp and favorite Quad FM Valve Tuner with external sterio decoder. FM was reaklly really good Did not replace rest of the equipment for a number of years did not make a claim

Then after a few years to add to the lonely Linn Sondeck and Ittock bought ATC Pre and ATC Power Amp can not remember the speakes at the time but gave them away then bought PMC MB Mid Box Transmission Line Speakers these go down at the -6dec point at 20htz not what I wanted which was the PB5 -6dec 16htz. Still very heavy to move around and lift 50kg each. I use a Pioneer UPD LX800 CD/SACD/Video Player, a compromise for peice and tranquility. Ver recently boughtTrento Internet Dab FM Radio cheapest bit of kit ever but I can listen to music in practically any nation including here at 320kbts it has band with adjustment for verious tasts including individual adjutment I do not bother though I have fiddled with equalisation, the FM os OK but no decent arial at the moment of time it has dab but not really interested in that again no arial anyway. The internet radio is a first for me can not beleive how cheap it was, I bought it on a whim after reading a Hi-Fi News article but reall did not expect anything but it s amaizing considering the bit rate 320KBs articulate good firm base and pleanty of free music. Both have quite eclectic tastes, classical, opera, JAZZ JAZZ JAZZ, Blues some rock like YES do not tend to like pop or rap or anything with little musical content or skill Folk some country but not everything.

Any way The boss has said I could spend ten grand on a Streemer. MMmmmm what... so been looking on line and I see that Michi could well be bringin out a Streemer to match the Amps and CD Player, why oh why did they turn out only a CD and not have a CD /SACD Player combination that imediatly rules that out for me. Interested in the steamer if it comes, may settle on less than was told to spend and buy a Michi Pree Amp and Michi Power Amp would really like mono pair but ouch I think that 500 wattsat 8ohms or 1,000W at 4ohms should do very nicely just have to make do haha . Have no neibours to bother only Fly By RAF and friends to buzz us so unfortunatly will not be hearing them from then on. As you know it is not the asolute loudness but its the easyness and the capability of the Amp to do its buisness without difficulty even through complex and demanding parts and to convey the music efotlessly.

So much else going on right now too with choosing a repalacement tractor and getting on with some hard graft.

Forgot to say Probably buy into Qobuz for a provider if and when going that way over to streaming.

Although generally have liked the our Linn Sondec and Ittock have had it many years early 80's with minimal upgrading I always felt that it sounded as though it had a little lower mid bloom might have been the room acoustics in the past. Very impressed by reading about Technics decks and was encouraged the other day by have you thought about changing the deck at any time. Of course i would very much like the top of the range but I can not see that happening. The lower range Technics 1200G seem very, very good at that sort of price and appears bullet proof and solid as a rock so maybe! Has the Technics 1200G been updated recently I know the decks slightly down range have been.

Linoleum BonyPart, again this streamer unknown to me yet seems to have a fan club so it must be good. The original Naim Nait takes me back quite a bit. Are you going to replace your turn table?

I’m not going back to vinyl … the sound I get from streaming is good enough for me
We use it less than we did. many of our records in our collection need cleaning all bought ne but some have been with us a very long time. A complete set of Vaughn Williams Symphonies EMI conducted by Sir Adrian Bolt seem to have some sort of Mold in some tracks and some other records just need a jolly good refresh. Most of our Jazz is OK as more recently bought but it can get dusty here coal fired Multi Fuel Stove an until recently only single pane windows. Needs insulation also. So could have it done or buy a suitable machine. Also lost some records from by now former spouse of a relative walked off with a handful pain in the arse could have gone after them but enough upset in the family so let it go to add to his own collection that was along time back. Also lost the rhythm of getting up and down just to turn or change and Turn Table needs an upgrade or replacing. Very nearly bought a Magnum Dynalab almost top of the range Valve FM Radio that had been hanging around but took too long making my mind up and no doubt the site was being watched for interest and another potential owner became the eventual owner. It was going for a reasonable amount considering what it was that is when I bout the internet radio device. Streaming is something that I really want to head for so a little quandary. We did enjoy playing the records years ago.
