Tyre Sidewall damage

Hi,

Annoyingly caught my tyre on the kerb where I live yesterday - have only been living on the street 13 years or so, although in my defence it has annoying width reduction bollards.

Alloy is damaged - but was already slightly kerbed so lessens the pain a little. Tyre took brunt of impact - it's taken a chunk out of the tyre sidewall - I think the photos make it look worse than it is but still not good no matter. Thickness of the chunk is the width of a pound coin.

I think it's an obvious answer, and probably for peace of mind - but just double checking this replacement is required. One website say's sidewall damage is MOT failure, but I think that's specifically if cords are showing. Given weight of the van etc I've provisionally booked it in for replacement.

Thanks

Yep it’s kaput
cords are exposed it’s unsafe and illegal.

sorry.

Ron
Thanks Ron - annoying but hey...

I wanted a like for like tyre as I'm running Kumho's all round at the moment - but it's looking like might be Friday before can get one - if I have one 'odd' tyre - i.e. non Kumho would it make that much difference, just concerned it will affect wear etc. Sorry if obvious question

Spotted similar damage on my nearside front and had the 245/40/r20 replaced on Friday at £163. Today slight graze with the curb and it's done it again. Less than 25 friggin miles on the tyre. Are the sidewalls of low profile tyres just crap? Might look pretty but they are turning out pretty expensive.
