When we had the VW Beetle, many many many years ago, we all used to wave to each other........not that many about now....ours was a 1974 1303......miss that car...

It was the same with LR mainly the Series 1,11,111, then 90,110 no name but then the Defender after it was named such. No idea if that recognition is still preserved it was not universal in any case. The wave is usually from interest groups leisure and fashion following owners. People that used them for work farmers and other utility workers probably wonders who they owed a pint too, and why they had accumulated friends all of a sudden!
It actually became tiresome when I had my Rover P6. The waving came from random drivers of random cars so was difficult to spot and respond to, but shops and petrol stations (which it visited a lot) were particularly trying as every f+×÷=r would come up and talk about the car. No one seemed capable of just letting me come and go like a normal person.

Happy times. I learnt to drive in Dads T2. My first car was a 1971 Beetle and like you say we all waved every time. I then had a 1972 as a spares car and bought a 1961 1200 as a project. Sadly time, money and room was all against me but I’m happy with the T5.1 and a Guzzi now… and still waving.
