Hi guys.
I’ve noticed when I start my T6, there’s a clicking / ticking noise for a good while. goes away when engine is warmer but I can also hear it in the background when accelerating . Anyone had similar ?

To be honest, the diesels in our vans tick and click a fair bit on start up (well mine does anyway).
Could you record it and post it here ?

You could stick it on Youtube, then link to it here.

Well it sounds normal to me, but there are people who better judges than me on here.
Which engine is it ?

102 T28
I’ve just noticed the ticking noise at the start more often, and can also here it on acceleration. If it’s normal im
Happy. It’s In for a service at VW next week, too.
thanks For your swift reply

Sounds like an HLA (hydraulic lash adjuster), basically a hydraulic tappet. Mine does it when cold and I'm hoping that an imminent oil service will help. It's not something I like to hear on a newer vehicle but isn't much of a concern personally.

Mine does the same sort of thing, only when cold and sound deadening isn't the best for engine noise in these base model vans. I don't get too concerned about it to be too honest.
Oil service made no difference to mine.

Brilliant, thanks. I’ll see what they say at VW next week. And update you all if they say any different.

Hi, my 2017 T28 doing exactly the same. Noise is on start up and acceleration but decreases when the engine warms up. Thinking could be DMF but pressing the clutch makes no difference to the noise? Did you manage to get this diagnosed? Thanks

That’s definitely hydraulic lifters (tappets) mine does it until to gets to warm . In summer it often goes away as soon as you start up. I wold not worry only if its the same when warm….

100% hydraulic tappets not quite taking up the adjustment until warm. It's the correct sound, and ticking at half engine speed, ie cam speed.
Definitely not the DMF.

This is mine. You have to listen for a noise just slightly faster than the second hand on a clock. Done around a thousand miles over the past two weeks. Did 140 miles today. Parked up outside the house and turned of the engine whilst I opened up the house, got back in and this noise started. Almost the same sound that some exhausts make as they cool.

That sound like a clutch or dual mass fly wheel problem. It will be ok then one day it will just loose drive....
