T6 unable to start

Good morning all.

Recently, my T6 lost power while driving then cut out and it now won’t start again.

AA came out and diagnosed it with a throttle body issue which is now been replaced and reset, but it still won’t start.

The AA came out again to have a look at it and diagnosed it with a fuel related issue and advised me to replace fuel filter as that could’ve been blocked. The fuel filter was replaced and primed before trying to start it but still unable to start for vehicle.

The vehicle doesn’t have any ECU codes and I’ve checked all fuses.

I’ve taken it into a VW commercial specialist and they said it needs a whole new fuel system within the engine bay and have quoted £6500 to do that.

Could anyone help me out here on what I could try doing before paying out a lot of money?

Thank you.

Sounds like the HPFP had failed?. (Hight pressure fuel pump(

Easy test is to measure the fuel rail pressure.

If the HPFP has failed, it puts metal filings in the fuel system.

OEM router is to replace, HPFP, injector, pump, tank and lines.

But an indy will flush the tank and lines... Fit a new HPFP, and send off the injectors for testing.... Then replace as needed.

Not a cheap job unfortunately....

Can you get more info from the garage to confirm?

Thank you for the reply!

From what you’re saying, the garage wants to go down the OEM route.

Might try what you’ve mentioned. The rubbish thing is, I’ve just put a full tank of fuel in it before it broke down.

I asked the garage for more info but they just said it needs a new fuel system within the engine bay.

"whole new fuel system within the engine bay and have quoted £6500 "

Check the details of the work quote.... That may be for a new HPFP, 4* injectors?... Then a flush and clean of the rest of the system..

A new tank contains all the adblue stuff.... So is pricey..... So they indy garage will empty it, clean it... And flush through the lines.... Including the return lines.

Could you explain how the shavings would get from the HPFP back into the tank?

On the quote, he just said everything thing related to it.

If the HPFP has failed, would it show low fuel pressure through the fuel rail then?

Might be worth getting your fuel tested as a bit of a coincidence if you'd just filled up. It might be contaminated in which case you could go back to the fuel station/company.

The pump brings up xxx amount of fuel to the engine, but in reality only needs xx amount. So sends the excess back to the tank unfiltered carrying the metal filings to create a nice snow globe of fuel and metal filings in your tank, followed by a nice little bill before Christmas!

Thank you for that. My Christmas list is money this year 😂

Priced some parts up from AUTODOC which is a lot cheaper than Eurocar parts.

Can anyone think of what else? Already got a new fuel filter waiting.

The metal particles are almost too small to see ....

The last time I had dealing with this.... The mechanic took a fuel sample about 2 pints. And poured into a clear sandwich bag .... Then drew a magnet over it...

Eventually a small in grey sludge collected in the corner next to the magnet.... That was the metal he said.

Tiny, but enough to knacker to the injectors.....

The metal comes from the HPFP itself the pump gets metal to metal contact..

This can cause low rail pressure.

The fillings can block the injectors, and jam them open or closed.

If open, they can leak fuel into the cylinder/s

Try these guys https://www.pfjones.co.uk/ That's who I used when I did mine, and the injectors are new and genuine but with the vag number buffed off. Also there are no surcharges to worry about.

At the least I'd be doing the high pressure pump, injectors, fuel leak off pipes, filter, fuel rail, timing belt kit with water pump.

I didn't mess around when I did mine, new low and high pressure pumps, 4 new injectors, fuel rail, fuel leak off pipes, fuel filter, timing belt kit, auxiliary belt. I also replaced the pipes going from the filter as they were going cheap on ebay. I cleaned the tank and high pressure pipework and pipes to and from the tank.

Then after all that, I ate rice and beans for the next year!

Thanks for the input! I’ll start pricing stuff up and go from there.

Why did you decide to do the timing belt aswell?

You need to remove the timing belt to change the high pressure pump, so in the bin it goes. Unless it has just been done, its just not worth the risk. If it breaks, it may make your fuel system repairs seem very reasonable!

So abit of an update for everyone.

I’ve got the van moved to another garage who works on Transports a fair bit. He’s done some testing and has confirmed everything is working as it should all the way to the injectors and has stated that no fuel is getting through all four injectors. The timing belt has also been inspected just to rule that out.

He’s going to test the injectors to ensure there’s nothing wrong with them but he does think it could be an ECU or immobiliser issue preventing it getting fuel.

Good thing I didn’t spend the £6500 VW wanted us to pay for a complete new fuel system.

Did you get this sorted in the end?
