T6.1, yet another microphone issues topic

Hi everyone,

I've decided to create an account here to help out my friend who has some issues with his T6.1 with Discover Media. Whenever he makes a phone call, on the other side it sounds like there is a jet fighter about to take off in the background. You really can't hear him on the phone at speeds above 80 km/h. It sounds almost as if the noise cancellation is working in reverse, the noise is amplified instead of reduced. Another friend has an earlier model T6 and this doesn't have any issues, even at speeds above 120 km/h, you hear some road noise, but not more than is to be expected.

FYI it's a 2021 T6.1 L2H1 with a second row of seats

Here's what we've tried:
- sound deadening the inside of the roof where the microphone is located
- replacing the microphone with a brand new VW OEM one
- bypassed the SOS calling box and wiring the microphone directly to the headunit
- tried different phones, iPhone and Android
- made sure it wasn't using the phone's or smartwatch microphone instead of the one in the van

Things that we still mean to try:
- reversing polarity on the microphone (maybe this will help the noise cancellation work the right way round?)
- adjust the microphone sensitivity with VCDS, (but not sure if this will work, because the volume of his voice is lower than that of the noise)

Using the phone on speaker gave perfect sound at any speed, with no noise whatsoever.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I'd of started with checking the software is up to date

I would defo try bypassing the factory wiring for microphone and test it that way. Its only 2 wires to back of media unit. This would defo clear few things up for you like eliminating the wiring or the microphone itself for starters.

Hi umlautian,
Did you get anywhere with this at all? I have a brand new 2024 kombi lwb that has the same issue, mine is the basic model headunit I believe but all my family, friends and customers are all complaining they can hear the background noise way more than my voice, bareable at low speeds but it gets worse as the van goes above 40-50mph and becomes bad, even been described as "are you inside the engine bay with the engine?"

We've decided to put everything back to stock. It seems the problem is with the headunit, but I'm not able to replace or update that by myself. I couldn't find a firmware update for the MIB2 Entry, so that was a dead end. My friend is taking the van to the VW dealership for further inspection, I will let you know what they find.

Hi guys,

It's been a while, but I have (bad) news. We brought the van to the VW dealership. They told me the software was already at the latest version and
as you know, dealerships being dealerships... They asked us to pick up the van again as they weren't able to replicate the problem. They said they drove it on the highway and the noise was not abnormal, but I highly doubt they did. Now we're going to make some voice recordings while driving and see if we can create solid proof.
