What a shame that now seemingly a mans word seemingly means nothing anymore, and i had thought this community on here was better than that.
Based on your comments, I'd agree that this is not seller conduct that we'd condone. However, to be fair to this community, having joined just 16 days ago, @bonmahon is hardly a forum stalwart and his behaviour does not exemplify the behaviour of well-established members.

On the other hand, if there was holding deposit offered or accepted, them the warning signs are there some would say.

I offered one, he said he didnt need it - we would sort it when i got there. And then i said again once i had booked flights, i was happy to leave a deposit - which was ignored.

It'll be of cold comfort to you now, but my stance has always been that buying off a forum member (especially when buying something expensive, like a van) is no different to buying off a stranger on FB Marketplace UNLESS they are well-established members and regular contributors (and better still, you've previously met and/or established a rapport with them).

Anyone can (and lots do) join the forum with the sole intention of selling a van, and these people are unlikely to feel any peer-pressure to (or be wary of reputational damage should they not) conduct themselves with the highest level of integrity.

I feel gutted for you after all your planning and think it is totally bad of the seller to do that to you after you offered a deposit etc.
When I sold my Hot rod the guy was not coming to view it for two days but I gave him my word I would give him first refusal. I had two other peaple ring after who said they would give me more cash for it and turn up within a couple of hours but I said sorry but would contact them if the other guy said no after viewing it. The first guy bought it and I phoned the other two to let them no it was sold. Yes they were gutted but thanked me for letting them know. Treat others how you like to be treated. 👍

Ben, what goes around, comes around....

Hold this thought.....Drew Pritchard goes into his shop and selects some old tat and then sells it for x100
And look what happened to him! Punched in the face by an irate husband, and his local boozer then bans him and not the assailant! It goes around alright.

Oh look just like that the picture is gone off Facebook. Still nice that he's been on here to read this thread but doesn't want to reply.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Ben seemed a really nice guy, and I would have loved for him, to purchase the van. Numerous people called, made offers and requested a viewing. I made clear to everyone, that I would not accept a deposit for the van, that I wouldn't sell to anyone that hadn't viewed the vehicle and that I would sell to the first person, who viewed and made a reasonable offer. Several people, made arrangements, but failed to turn up, others cancelled last minute, literally whilst I stood waiting for them by the side of the vehicle. However some lovely people like Ben arranged to view the vehicle and seemed genuine. I had someone booked in today prior to Ben, and others were booked for the weekend after Ben's prospective viewing this Friday.

I sold the vehicle today to a camper conversion specialist, with an established business, we agreed a price (very fair). I sent an invoice for full amount plus vat (subject to inspection). He caught the train from the Home Counties this morning, spent 30 seconds looking around the van, made a bank transfer for the full amount and drove away.

I should say that whilst I was willing to try accommodate Ben and I had spent money on accountants fees to ascertain procedure. Ben wanted to purchase the van without paying any Vat, under the Personal Export Scheme. I am an antique dealer not a car trader and had no knowledge of the scheme. The advise I received, was that after Ben had viewed and had made any offer unconditional. I would have to fill out relevant HMRC form and send it off with required detail, then wait minimum 14 days, for HMRC approval.

I made Ben aware the vehicle was no longer available, within 10 minutes of selling the van. This being two days prior to his prospective viewing date. I did message Ben and apologise at the same time.

I wish Ben all the best in finding, the right vehicle and did notice he has messaged other prospective sellers about their vans, prior to mine ever being listed for sale. I am sure he will get the van he has clearly been seeking, sooner rather later and get as much enjoyment I have had from the numerous Transporters, I have owned over the years.

I am enjoying the forum, but may be too old in my 60s for social media and naive in it's nuance.

Best regards,

Mark

Mark,

Thank you for your reply, i will however correct a few things:

'I had someone booked in today prior to Ben' - Why didnt you tell me this?! You ignored all my messages where i clearly stated i had booked flights!!!

'I would sell to the first person, who viewed and made a reasonable offer' - This is not true, you never stated this.

'You apologised for 'any inconvenience caused' and then blocked me. You have wasted my time, you have cost me hundreds of pounds in travel arrangements because you could not be bothered to tell me other people were interested and that you would indeed sell to the first person. This has nothing to do with being naive on social media, it is common courtesy and would have been the decent thing to do to be open and up front when you knew i had spent money on travel arrangements.
