Hmm interesting as the VW dealer fit the wheels and tires so I have no idea all I have is confirmation that all is VW accessories fitted by VW. I will definitely ask. Thanks for the info!

Nice!
Couldn't help notice the tyre load rating. You will not pass a class 7 MOT test if it is indeed a T32.

They’ve done it before..
See this post for all you need to know, and let us know what the dealer does:

I have called the VW dealer was told I don’t need class 7 MOT as the T32 gross weight is 2200kg so it’s class 4 MOT. Tomorrow I will pop to see my friend who is MOT technician and will confirm that with him.

Surely they mean 3200kg, hence the T32 title.
Your friend will likely confirm what we have said, which your weight rating plate will confirm:
The final important factor when dealing with wheels is the load rating. The load rating of a wheel expressed in kilograms (KGs) is the maximum weight the wheel is rated for. This figure will be given in documentation for the wheel and also stamped on the inside of the rim.
The minimum load rating of a wheel will be half the given axle weight for that particular wheel but be aware that axle weight is not half of the vehicle max weight
eg a T32 (3200KG) has an axle weight of 1710/1720 KG so the minimum load rating would be half of 1720
= 860KG which is denoted as 103 on the sidewall of the tyre.

This is a grey area and you will find lots of discussion on here about MOT Class 4 or 7, and even much confusion between different MOT stations. Have a search.
There is also the discussion around commercial vehicle speed limits that are kind of interesting. 60 on a dual carriage way, etc.

Kerb weight may be ~2.2t, but gross weight is definitely 3.2t if T32. The kerb weight is the key when discussing speed limits, but duel purpose is also a phrase that helps.

If Class 4 then tyres only need to be 'fit for purpose' to get an MOT as they don't check loading. However, people then get a bit funny about whether the insurance will pay out if there is an 'issue' while running under rated tyres.

I'm a T32 Shuttle, so definitely Class 4 passenger vehicle (8 seats total), but I went 103 tyres just to cover all bases.

Welcome to team Black by the way. That is a very nice van.

I will definitely investigate as I need to know. When I’m looking on V5 then Mass in service ( empty) is 2164kg. Revenue maximum weight is 3200kg. The tires are 102 rated so 850kg per wheel totals to 3400kg. So I’m little confused.

It's the axle weights that need supporting. You will find the fronts are 1710kg, and the rears 1720kg I believe. Look behind the air filter box in your engine bay.. therefore 2 x 850 doesn't support either at full load - just. Not that you're ever likely to go to full load, but the MOT chap will see it differently, if it does happen to need class 7.

N1, so definitely commercial.
Have a look for the Kombi Speed Limit thread, as that goes into great depth over the 'mass in service' and what that actually means.
6 seat too. I counted 5. Mine is wrong on this aspect too...

Yes 5 seater but V5 states 6 even more confusing now :)))) I’m reading through the articles about the speed limit but I agree with 60mph as due to the mass in service is over 2040kg. The tires rating makes sense 103 now. Thanks

Update I have send email to my dealer he accepted my enquiry for tires rating now and waiting for technicians answer. In meantime I have found this table gov.co.hi website I can’t work it out

Tyre load index table
The tyre load index table displayed below shows the load rating for both single wheel and dual wheel configurations, for example 121/120 = 2,900 single, 5,600 dual.
If a tyre has only one load index marked, then that index refers to use in single formation. Such tyres can be used in dual formation by applying the following formula:
Maximum load shown × 1.91 = dual formation maximum load

Just received reply from VW dealer. The tires are satisfactory, and confirmed so if anything goes wrong I have a proof from VW.

Good afternoon,

I can confirm the tyres are satisfactory for the weight and size of your vehicle.

The vehicle as standard came with 17” wheels, the wheels and tyres currently on your vehicle are upgraded to 20”

Tyres need to be the same spec across the same axle.

Kind regards

Tomorrow I will pop to see my friend who is MOT technician and will confirm that with him.
The problem will be that the police will likely still report you, which means you taking a day off work to show the Magistrate that letter.
Take back an MOT failure ticket and see what Wayne has to say to that.

Well I think they are wrong.. I phoned up cordwallis when I was ordering my t32 and enquired about the supermetal trident that VW are supplying as an offical accesory and was told that they are not for a t32... only up to t30... yuo can find it in the new accessories brochure for the t6.1.. you'll need 265/40/20 ( or 265/45/20.. its on this forum )... get the garage to stick som eon for you free of charge.

Have you confirmed your axle load ratings are over 1700 kg each?
That letter from VW is laughable and just not correct. It’s a bit worrying really. Still, it’s not likely to cause you any issues, it’s just not correct to the regulations.
Get out and rag it, and you’ll have a new set fitted by mot time!

I will wait for the VW head office reply then I will act accordingly. Yes I have stated it’s on T32 with front axle 1710kg and rear axle 1720kg and specifications of the tires and the 20 inch wheels. Should receive reply in 48 hours.

Had reply from the VW head office that 102 it’s under rated for the T32 and dealer should fit new tires if not then I should contact the VW office. I have forwarded the email to my dealer requested new tires so let see.

So this is getting even more ridiculous I have went to see my friend MOT technician and x tyre fitter. I have been told that’s absolutely fine 275/35/r20 102y as there’s always 10% allowed for weight ratio to axle so 850kg per tire is fine and no problem what so ever for MOT!
