Suspension advice on an ‘05 T5

Evening all,

I have recently become the unexpected owner of a 2005 T5 SWB Kombi with 71k on the clock. The last MOT gave the only advisory as one of the rear dampers needing attention. I’m of the opinion that I should probably do all of them as at this age, it’s not going to be long till the next corner appears in the advisories, and the then the next and the next.

Currently running the standard 16” wheels so no need for lowering, however if I did want to in the future, maybe I’m best to do this now?

All thoughts are welcome on this…thanks for any help. IMG_2659.jpeg

If you’re happy with it the way it is at present then stick to the standard set up and save your money. There’s loads of very low mileage T6 shocks / springs going for free / pennies on the forum, which will fit the T5. . Just check out the for sale section or post a wanted thread. Then you can replace both rear shocks at your leisure as they’re easy to do.

Thanks Wills. I meant to put that in the post really, so all T5 - T6.1 shocks & Springs will fit onto the T5?

A T6.1 front strut shocks and springs fits a T5 or T6 perfectly, if you c mix em up though you will get different heights as the spring seat is 20 mm higher on T 6.1

That’s real useful thanks Steve. I think I’ll head down the route if some standard nearly new shocks with some 40mm lower springs if I can find some…seems to look right on the vans I’ve seen and if I do change the wheels (needed for the bigger brake setup), it won’t look crazy.

Right…now to find parts!

Only other thing to make sure is the front strut is right T32 won’t fit aT28 orT30 ( these are the same )

As previously mentioned, in your situation I’d definitely have a telephone conversation with Steve from @CRS Performance

Your new van (to you) has obviously not been previously messed around with or ‘molested’ as they say, so you are in the ideal position to get things right first time and as a customer of Steve’s I can vouch for his specialist expertise.

Tell Steve how you want it to look, if comfort is the priority etc, etc. He can do your big brakes, wheels and obviously your suspension all under one roof. That’s what I would do anyway.

Great van by the way!
