I know the vans have an imoberliser cat 1 but are they fitted with an alarm system ?
And if so what what does this cover in regard to sensors etc.
Thanks

Alarm is standard on highline and optional on trend line or start line
Standard alarm has internal front sensor (rear is optional I think) and covers tow away/towbar etc

Mine is a Shuttle SE. Anyone’s guess I suppose. Looking in to aftermarket stuff and thinking of a Clifford with Blackjax added for extra piece of mind. I’ve read they are very good if installed correctly (got that covered) most problems seem to stem from dodgy installation and poor wiring by idiots. So I’m not fitting

I'm a firm believer in "if they really want it they'll get it". The best we can hope for is making it as hard as possible for them, slow them down and improve the chance of getting back (assuming you want it back). I wouldn't rely on any factory fit alarm/immobiliser on its own and would always look at adding extra mechanical and/or electronic security layers on top.

Exactly my thoughts. You really have to get round the simple key theft cloning situation. Which is what I intend to do with the upgrade. Possibly a tracker too but best not to get it stolen in the first place

Not wishing to start any arguments and each to their own but I find it hard to beleave Cally and caravel owners would just stick with factory security.

Not arguing, but why the hell shouldn't they rely on 'Factory Security'?? They've paid circa £60k for a vehicle, it's about time VW (and other manufacturers) invested the profits into better security. I followed the Transit forum before buying my T6, their security is a well known and well highlighted joke too.

Ignorance is bliss and, to be fair, I want to live in a world where people can work hard to earn nice things for themselves with no fear that someone else can just come along and think they can take it. Factory fit alarms/immobilisers should be up to the job but we all know they are not - it's a bit like cyber security - the technology keeps evolving but so too do the abilities of the people that seek to exploit it.

My other car is a Land Rover Defender and I follow a few of the forums, such as Landywatch - this site is all about reporting the theft of Land Rovers and attempting to reunite them with their rightful owners - it still astounds me that, with the number of these particular vehicles that are currently being stolen to be stripped down for parts and/or shipped abroad, that people have them sat on their drives, etc., with no additional security.

Your absolutely right. What’s the real cost of the best getting factory fitted as standard ? Not much to VW. Not even on the options list for upgrades. The problem is some people arnt in the know and except a cat 2 emobliser will do the job. Only a bit of light research will highlight the issues but owners shouldn’t have to do that and I very much agree with you. It’s almost like going back to the 80s and 90s again !

@Blitz If your Shuttle has the interior sensors, then my understanding is that this is a Cat 1 system. See picture below. Sensor is the last thing on the roof lining nearest the tailgate.

I'm not with the van just now but if memory serves me correct, I think there is. There is also a switch to the right of the drivers seat beneath the B pillar that allows you to switch the sensors off. Handy for dogs, children, sleeping overnight etc. Drivers door must be open. Press button (it will change colour). Shut door. Deactivates interior motion sensors only.

Thanks @Dieseldonkey ill check that out when the vans back. Think I’ve seen the switch though  thought what’s that bloody switch down their on its own in no mans land.

Having worked in vehicle security for thirty years or more I can tell you that apart from dealing with the key cloning issue there is nothing to be gained by fitting aftermarket if you have the factory cat one. You'd be better spending your cash on a tracker. After all, an alarm will only warn of unauthorised entry, not stop the theft, and if you are not around to respond then no other bugger will!
Ask your insurance company if you will get a discount for fitting another alarm and the answer will probably be no because the stats show that it will have very little impact on the likelihood of your van getting nicked. Clifford are brilliant at seducing customers with snake oil but at the end of day an alarm needs to make a noise if someone gets in your van and that's it. If your van van has a factory alarm then fitting something like an Autowatch Ghost will make it as secure as you can.

Thanks for the insight @travelvolts. I agree I won’t fit another alarm if I have one already. I just want that protection when it’s on my drive at night so myself and the neighbors could here it.
I’m deffo looking at the Blackjax or Ghost to prevent simple key theft and cloning etc. Do you have an opinion on these products ?

The Ghost is excellent. I cannot comment on the Blackjax as I have always avoided Clifford products for reasons previously stated.

I’m I right in saying the Ghost hasn’t got a Thatcham rating as yet ? So getting a discount will be difficult ?

Bugger the alarm, I spent my money up front on a good gap insurance policy, I couldn’t replace the velle on an insurance payout ....
