New release of ODB11 compares software versions with other users versions for the same hw. Mine is looking a little out of date. Is this a job that can only be done by VW?

VW tags vehicles in need for a software update by VIN. Their approach seems to be a conservative one - 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'. So their regular "guided fault finding" -tool most likely won't find those "unnecessary" updates. However, an enthusiastic technician can stretch the limits a bit. The unfortunate part is that the descriptions of the actual changes are usually not too useful to justify if the update is of any use.

Anyways, the software packages eventually will be available through erWin and either ODIS or VCP can be used to upload them into your van . However, in the current distribution package none of the "new" ones mentioned above were in there yet. So at the moment seems that only VW could do it.

Hi, a friend of mine has his own Independent VW specialist garage and he can also do some software updates and code keys.
He can access basic technical information and workshop manuals through their service info system I think he does it by buying diagnostic time via a dongle in his computer, don’t know how much he pays but it is an hourly rate and I doubt it’s cheap, he passes the cost on to the customer as part of the initial quote.
I think it has something to do with block exemption but no idea of any proper details.
