If this has been asked before then forgive me but what is proples oppioons on what sat nav to use. I know a lot of you have them in the media centre on the dash but it's not someting I wanted, I don't like glancing down at it plus they are a faff to update. I used to have a tomtom XL till I got the swift but as that has one built in (garmin) I got rid of it. Now with my new T6 hopefully being built in a week or so I will be getting a new sat nav. question is do I change to a Garmin from the Tom tom. so the question is which is your preferance if you use a screen or dash nounted one?

TomTom full app on an iPad mini mounted in the Top Cubby...
Currently using apple maps on CarPlay, but the iPad is my Fav...

Do you have a real mount or do you just rest or balance it in the cubby?

I use a Garmin like this nüvi 3598LMTD | Garmin

I can't recommend it enough - absolutely brilliant with free updates for life, great graphics, speed warnings, camera warnings, all sorts.
We have a Brodit mount in both the Subaru and he van (we use it in both) which is definitely the best way to mount a portable satnav.

They do a version for the Transporter/normal dash and the Cal/Velle comfort dash (make sure you choose the right one!!).

Of course there's the wire "issue" but it doesn't worry us at all.

We had built in satnav in the old Cali and we have it in our BMW- it's okay but dates SO quickly, updates are a pain and usually expensive (£200+ in the BMW), most don't do camera warnings or speed (ours tells you the speed limit and gives you your GPS speed) and so on.

I also appreciate phone nav is good but around here, I've had too many cases of not getting enough phone signal and so having no nav. A portable satnav doesn't need phone reception.

I'm not paying for factory nav again - although the new M140i has it for "free" now so I'd probably accept that...

With a Brodit mount, it needs to match the satnav and the vehicle (you buy it in two parts) and it's about £40 but worth it IMO.

I have used many but the best option as just mentioned is the Brodit Active mount for iPad. I am currently using one with an iPad Pro but that is a little too large for the Cubby so will probably move back to the iPad Mini. it means we have everything we need in one unit, tomtom. google, music, movies with Bluetooth audio to the sound system etc. and take it out with us walking using memory map and then when we go off road use Motion X HD for tracks etc.

You can adapt the mount for the cubby or simply use a RAM mount to stick it to the windscreen if you prefer..

@Loz - have you been off road in your Cali yet?
We did some reasonably "proper" stuff in Galicia but haven't pushed our T6 as hard as we pushed our old T5.1 - we did borderline green laning in that!

My pet hate. Sat navs stuck on window screens especially right in front of view. I always go built in or get my dads rac map annual from 1994.

Obviously no help to this thread.

I found google maps nav to be great.

This is what I did on the Touareg with a much smaller Cubby.

That iPad Mini mount will fold down flat in the Transporter one it's huge.

Seen too many people with them line of sight, I tend to have mine as low as I can

Even worse when its night time and they have them on daylight settings! How are people this dumb allowed a driving licence?

Last Tomtom I had the thing changed automatic when the night came but I have seen people driving with them glareing int heir faces

I've got a tomtom in the works car. It's pretty good, and is fast in its reaction, can't outrun it even when driving at response speeds. It's also updateable when you pop it on the computer. Have to say though the mounting bracket is a bit poo, and as is the issue with all of these type of sat navs, take it upon themselves to just drop off the windscreen when they feel like it.
