Private Plate Sourcing

anyone know how to source a plate? Not so much sourcing as finding out who owns it, i know it's on a white transit but don't know where or owned by whom, i want to see if they will consider selling. I have tried the DVLA, even telling them to pass my details to the owner so as not to breach GDPR, but they won't do that. Ideas?

I very much doubt a member of the public will be able to obtain the personal details of a number plate for several obvious reasons.

You definitely can't get that information, there have been prosecutions of people who wrote to the DVLA claiming the target vehicle was involved in an accident in an attempt to gain the owners details so an offer could be made to purchase it.

If you know where it is, you can leave a note with your details and that's about it.

Your only possibility is to approach the big reg number brokers like Newreg or Regtransfers and tell them you're interested in buying it. They have no more access than you do but you might stumble across the one that sold it to him and they would have the contact details and may get in touch (obviously not giving it to you) and tell them there is a potential buyer. It's a long shot but I know it happens because I have a plate I bought 16 yrs ago and have been approached twice by Regtransfers in that time with offers.

You can also check if the vehicle is taxed and MOT’d

Thanks for the replies, i knew about not being able to obtain their information, this is why i thought DVLA may send them mine with the reason i wanted to get in touch, but they wouldn't do that either, i have asked few reg companies, however they just want to try and sell you the other stuff they have. Not a big deal, i'll just keep looking

Yeah I did this search the other day on DVLA site. Gutted to find successor to my current T6 #$% personal plate, ie T7 #$% has been nabbed and is being displayed on a white Audi somewhere. I mean come on, how many donkeys could possibly have #$% as their initials.

But hey, maybe all is not lost. The T7 may never come to fruition. I mean cross the first letters of Transporter with the last letters of Transit and you end up with.......

.....A migraine!

lol. I bought the T7 version of my plate a couple of months ago - if T7 doesn’t come to fruition or we don’t buy one, £250 from DVLA is not a lot to lose - in the interim it will soon be going on my other car.

I wish you hadn’t posted that. Started looking at T7 reg plates, and what we have on our T6 is available.

Decisions, decisions .....
