Day/activity van, not full camper. Got a Halfords thermo electric jobbie but it's fairly crap. Only usually away for 2 or 3 nights at a time usually.

Looks like passive cool boxes have come a long way, quite fancy one of these:

Also looking at:

Both 15 litres, it's only for milk, fruit, pack of sausages and so on. Don't need masses of storage for cold tinnies.

Help me decide please!

have you got a Leisure battery in your van ?

The alpicool will eat your starter battery in a couple of days - for your stated use case, Passive dometic ftw

(We have a DayVan and the thermo/electric coolbox is OK on the LBs (2x 75ah) for max 2 days, depending on ambient temp, using lights etc.
Also have a 40L compressor fridge/freezer, that draws 4x less power than the thermo/electric coolbox (when set at 4 degrees))

100% get a compressor fridge.

Handy to use at home when not in the van

How are intending to power the compressor fridge. I would pair it with a decent powerbank and folding solar panel and you'll be fine for 3 days if not more

Yeah brand new 100Ah LifePo4 leisure battery and 120w folding solar via MPPT thingy. LB only running lights and phone charging at the moment.

No DC to DC, seeing if I can manage only on solar. Diesel heater going in in a few weeks as well.

Appreciate your input Lee.

There’s not much difference in price between a high end cool box & a fridge, so it’s a no brainer imho. Remember a cool box will only slow down the warming of the contents from the temperature they went in at. A fridge will maintain or lower the initial temperature.

Good point about the price, £115 passive, £139 active for what I'm looking at, both 15 litre but the active is huge in comparison of course. Nothing to go wrong on the passive one either.

I admit I'm drawn to the simplicity of passive.

Compressor all day long. Coolbox is only 'X' degrees cooler than the surrounding air. I had a coolbox and I will not go back. I have it in the van currently because a ice chilled can when its 27c outside cannot be beaten. And if you ae having a diesel heater then Dc-Dc charger would be a must for me. They are power hungry on start up and if you are intending using the van all year you will soon eat in to 100ah. Thats why I stepped up to the 260ah Seatbase

The battery and heater thing is an interesting one for me, previous setup was fairly old 90Ah AGM LB, Split charge, Eberspacher, crappy eBay solar which reckoned to be 100w but more like 60w (based on the new Renogy one I got).

Never once did I run out of power despite leaving the heater on all night on occasion.

Seems I've upped my power game somewhat with the new stuff so should be OK.

Alrighty you filthy animals, I'm experimenting with a passive cool box despite your wise words ...

Bought a bright orange 28 litre Dometic jobbie (15 litre clearly wasn't going to be big enough) and will load it up in the morning with 50/50 frozen and fridged stuff plus some ice packs.

Back on Sunday, full report later.
