I was working under the van and noticed this:

I believe it is the level sensor to do with the LED lights.
VW said its quite common, the parts are really cheap, but they want between 1 and 2 hours to fit (@ £135 plus per hour.)

I asked them which wires connected to which pins but they would not tell me. If I order a new plug and pins with wires anyone know where I find out what goes where?

Thanks

I may be wrong but..... I should think that that sensor would just be a variable resistor of some sort so polarity is of no consequence, the differing colours of the lead being a red herring as it is just a piece of off-the-shelf cable. I see the same type of cable on heater fuel pump leads which confuses people as to polarity when there is no right or wrong way.
5 minute job to put new 5 pence terminals on, longer if the lead needs to be extended a little of course, 30 seconds to take old terminals out of the housing. ( Once you have determined what terminals have been used) 1 to 2 hours is taking the P.

Three cables though: brown, blue and black?

I should be under my van tomorrow so I will check ( I have led headlights also). I'll get a terminal out and see what type it is also.
The question is how did the lead get caught? Piece of debris caught on shaft which then caught the lead? Might be worth extending it so that it can be held further away from the shaft?

Are there no fragments of insulation still attached to the pins that you can get a colour reference off?

Apparently it's not that uncommon for this lead to get damaged.
Thanks, I cant work out how to get the plug off at the moment lol.
Lead got caught on a cold chisel. :/

Ooo my specialist subject, lets get the camera out

The rubber boot slides off the plastic plug to reveal where the wires go in

The tab has to be lifted the release the plug from the sensor, press in direction of pen

The purple locking tab inside the plug needs top be slid to the side to allow crimps to be inserted/removed, here the tab in the open position

Pin1 = brown (0V)
Pin2 = black (5V)
Pin3 = blue (PWM)

I think you will struggle to get the old pins out of the plug with no wires attached so you are going to need three new crimps and possibly a replacement plug - 4B0973712A

Easy enough to get pins out, I have to do it all the time on my heaters. If you have the correct tool it will push them out as the tabs are depressed. The worst bit is getting those locking tabs to slide usually.

Let me know if you need any crimps and/or replacement plug i have all in stock

As a point of interest part number 4B0973712A now looks slightly different.

The purple sliding tab inside is now brown.
