None VW issue.

I know this isn't a VW issue, but there are some pretty knowledgable people on here.

My Motorhome is based on the Fiat Ducato and it's recently developed an air-bag fault, which I now know is very common and due to my engine battery going flat. (it actually came to the end of it's life after 6 years)
Anyway, we've had it checked out and it's a passenger air-bag ECU/module that bolts to the floor. I've removed this and sent it to a company called Crashdata, who specialise in fixing ECU's and they've reported back that it's beyond repair. They also reported that these ECU's are in a worldwide shortage due to this being such a common Fiat/Peugeot issue.

My main problem is the MOT was due and now I cannot get it MOT'd meaning I have a £70k box on wheels sat indefinitely in my storage site. I've spoke to several dealer friends of mine and they too are waiting on several of these ECU's for their own customers, one of them has been off the road for 18 months, with no ETA on the part in sight.

Can anyone think of any way around this? I've tried all the obvious routes, like sourcing a used one to have coded into my Motorhome, but there are literally none for sale anywhere.
Oh and yes I've thought about ways to hide the Red error light, but it also bleeps constantly and reads a message across my clocks saying air-bag fault, so not easy to hide.

A day of phone calls and emails and I'm running out of options. As per all manufactures these days, Fiat won't speak to the public, and I've not had any response from emails as yet.

See point 2, looks like if you could disable the warning light you'd be good to go?

This came up on my research, but disabling the actual air-bag system isn't exactly legal, and I don't know anyone that can do this.
I did try just turning off the passenger air-bag, but this didn't knock off the warning either.

This is probably too straightforward to ever work, but.... if it’s the passenger side, doesn’t it have an airbag disable switch so you can put rear facing baby seats in there? If so, does switching this make the error go away?

Could you hire a van with the same ecu and 'borrow' it for a day to get yours through the test? Failing that I think you need to find a tester willing to overlook the fault. I know both options come with their own moral dilemmas but sometimes needs must.

Tried that, no difference.

Second hand one from breakers?

Tried that. Been calling and emailing all day but those breakers I've managed to get hold of either didn't have the right one, or they'd sold straight away.

They have to be coded into the vehicle, or they need to be unlocked by companies like Crashdata.

Don’t suppose this is the part number

Sadly not, but have just sent them an enquiry, thanks.

Remove the passenger seat for the MOT, no seat, no airbag???

My dad has the same base van for his camper and I’m sure he mentioned that same issue to me. I’ll see what he did and report back.

One for sale here, might be worth a punt?

I've seen that one. The problem is some of these sellers won't guarantee that the airbag hasn't already deployed and therefore without it being fully tested, they cannot guarantee they will work, which seems pretty pointless to me as a buyer.

Hopefully I'm sorted now, pending a conversation tomorrow with the Fiat dealer.
A lot of these companies like the one you suggested will repair ECUs, but mine is beyond that now and out of the dozens of emails and calls I made on Friday, only 1 can get hold of this ECU directly from Italy and none of the others have them in stock or a date as to when they can get them. I'm not actually counting my chickens on the dealer tomorrow until they take my money and the part is in my hands.
On the same subject, this Airbag ECU issue seems to be huge the more digging you do. It's not just Fiat that's suffering, it's most manufactures because the actual component seems to be manufactured in the same factory.

Another example of craziness.
An ECU packs up because a battery goes flat or some other minor fault, the dealers cannot get the ECU, so you try and have them repaired, but that's seems to be a ratio of 7 out of 10 can be fixed, meaning 3 cannot, meaning there are hundreds of vehicles sat waiting for some kind of solution that's not coming, or they go down the illegal route of having the light hidden, meaning a potential life saving device not working when it's needed. Or, like my dealer friend, a huge amount of money in two of their Motorhomes, just sat waiting for a part that they have no ETA on and one already 18 months down the line. What kind of stupidity is that:mad:

It’s crazy how one component supplier can throttle the whole repair industry. There are too many things made overly complicated these days so that repair is impossible.

I’ve just had to launch one of my Apple HomePods at just over two years old, Apple don’t fix them, there are no spares so it’s tough.

There’s a lot of ethical questions that suppliers need to be made to answer, what about the right to repair instead of computer says no.
