New engine time - Caravelle 2016 77k

Their quote does not provide a diagnosis other than saying it's using too much oil, and here is the long expensive list of parts to fix it. I've asked them to elaborate as the warranty company will want more info
Maybe too much oil due to fuel dilution? If that’s the case the oils lubrication properties (film strength) with have de-graded resulting in engine wear.

Super sorry to hear this. I have the same engine as you.

Oil consumption you mention is insane you must have been filling it up before every drive!

Was it bad the day you bought it. Assume with that sort of oil consumption that the low oil light must have been coming on pretty quickly.

Not even sure if this is possible but has it been scanned to see if low oil has caused damage prior to you owning it?

The engine is model CXEB013318
Final costs are in:

VW contribution £6,304
Cost for me to pay - £5,852

£12,156 total which is ridiculous.
If you’re local to Worthing it would be worth giving @BognorMotors a call to see how they could help.

This one is not the same engine but doubtless also due to heavy oil consumption.

It’s worth asking how much he could swap the engine for, it must surely be less than the £12k vomit inducing quote you’ve got recently!

When swapping an engine under warranty with a VW contribution for using oil it will also more than likely have new turbos, DPF etc. it doesn’t take long for it to mount up. £2k of that is Vat. Coupled with probably 20-30 hours at main dealer labour over £100+. We’ve heard of a couple of these with issues. But certainly not to the same levels as the 180ps.

Happy to quote of course, but I suspect it won’t be less than the £5852 you’ve been quoted. I’d have a chat with VW Uk. Did you buy from a main dealer, does it have full VW history?

And this doesn’t include other bits found during stripdown!

Update to the oil consumption amount I mentioned. After speaking to the mechanic, it has been using 1.2ltr every 440 miles which is still cause for a new engine. So not the 7ltr I mentioned.
I assumed that when the dipstick showed empty that it was empty when infact the mechanic tells me it the dipstick range is only around 1.2ltrs

As we don't use the van that much the light didn't come on for 3 months after buying it. At that point, I topped it up thinking nothing of it, and then 3 months later it came on again with 500-mile ish intervals. Naturally the more miles I do in quick succession, the more the light has been coming on.

So from what you are saying the engine was defective when you bought it.
1.2L / 440 miles is terrible, my 21 year old audi with well over 200K is worn but still only uses 0.2L over the same distance.
If you bought it from a dealer have you approached them on the matter? There’s nothing to loose.

Have you got anything in writing from the dealer? If they have put in writing that they will contribute the parts I suspect they know that they are already in the wrong. Might be worth pushing to see if they'll cover the whole cost?

Van was purchased through Used cars & Vans for sale in Newport & South Wales: Motor Hub Wales

I approached them on two other issues a month after buying. AC not working and heated seat not working. AC was working when I bought it but I didn't check heated seats.
Their response was to push it through the warranty that's whats it's there for. Then when checking the warranty policy it oddly called out AC as being an added extra. When regassed it ran out after two weeks, a new compressor later (which warranty covered 50% of) the problem persists. This makes me think the garage knew there was a bigger issue. Now under investigation with a specialist AC.
The heated seat investigation started to rack up time in what the cost would be so I binned it off and am going to someone who knows what they are doing.

Only that VW has agreed to pay 70% of the cost of the parts as 'Good will' This term and its vagueness protects them from liability. TBH I need the engine sorted as I'm off to the alps twice in feb and cant be arsed to mess about that much anymore

Update - Warranty wont cover any costs as the issue is a known fault hence the VW contribution. The issue is down to coolant leaking into the cylinders causing corrosion leading to oil getting in places it shouldn't.

Coolant leaking from where?
Charge air cooler, EGR cooler or cylinder head?

Sounds like BS, coolant would only get from the EGR when the engine was running and that would burn off, the only way it would sit in there (overnight) would be from the head or head gasket.

I'm interested in this answer as I have the same engine code and mine also uses quite a bit of oil. Is your garage suggesting that this is the fault that's causing all these engines to use extra oil?

I'm no expert so these might be stupid questions below

If the coolant was leaking wouldn't the levels be dropping or is the volume too small to notice?

If the oil isn't being burnt in combustion it must be going somewhere and given the quantities then it should be leaking somewhere right?

Got the van back two weeks ago, 5 days before a trip to the snowy alps. Tried to break it in and tease out any issues so did 400 miles in a day, few sensor pings came up and were sorted. JCB checked all levels and nuts and bolts the day before departure. 700 miles into the trip, at the top of the mountain, she went pop, with 4 kids and two adults inside. Thick white smoke plumbing from exhaust, revs off the chart (I didn't check temp gauge at the time). I shut it down, called a recovery. Recovery came, couldn't start it, so its now sitting in a VW centre in France. Had to fly family back to UK and working on getting it repatriated to UK as under warranty (all being sorted by green flag)

Unfortunately for me, a lesson has been learned, I'm not sure what the lesson is yet, as the van was seemingly ok when I bought it. It let me down at the single moment when I needed it more than ever. I will get it sorted and px it straight away for a 2021 plate Caravelle

I decided not to get it diagnosed and fixed in France as the cost for this I will incur. Whereas I am entitled to repatriation as it couldn't be fixed before I departed home as it happened on a Friday and we left on the Sunday.

Sorry to read this. From your comment about the revs and white smoke, I assume the engine was dieseling?

Not good. I hope you get it sorted and get some closure on this one.

@Surf_star what was the outcome and how do you rate Green Flag for European breakdown cover?
