Engine noise [Resolved]

Noticed this noise appear yesterday. From the cab I thought it sounded exhaust related. Opening the hood it sounded like it was coming from near the charge cooler. Haven’t got a clue as I’m no mechanic for sure. Anybody have any suggestions?

Is it coming from any of the solonoid valves on the bulckhead?

It’s worth checking that it’s not coming from the rear flexi from the exhaust to the EGR. It sounds like a gas leak, whether that be boost via the charge cooler or the EGR feed from the exhaust. Can you smell any exhaust fumes under the bonnet?

I can hear a vacuum leak as you open the bonnet too....

Can’t smell any fumes in particular. Clearly this isn’t something I’m going to fix but this is the first time I have had a vehicle I’m interested in understanding. Can I ask does the EGR feed into the turbo intake? I’m not really sure what the charge cooler does. Time for a bit of Googling.

The EGR has a motorised valve attached to the cooler and opens to allow a small portion of exhaust gas from the exhaust, through the cooler and then into the front plastic pipe from the charge cooler into the intake manifold.

As the turbo will heat the air as it’s compressed, it’ll be less dense and contain less oxygen. It passes this through an air to water intercooler to reduce the temperature and therefore increase the density. More dense air = more oxygen + more fuel = more power.

If there’s a leak after the MAF then the van can over fuel as it’s got less air (oxygen) than it thinks so the air fuel mix is wrong.

MAF?

Sorry, mass air flow sensor. It measures the air flow by heating a wire and monitoring how much current it takes to heat it back up to a known temperature. When it knows the air quantity it can work out how much fuel to add.

I had a slight leak in my front EGR pipe and boost was leaking out which made it slightly over fuel. Performance was blunted and the DPF was regenerating more than usual due to the higher soot production.

Gutted, just spoken to the garage and they are saying its the flywheel. Currently only in stock via VW at a cost of £500!!
God knows what the total bill is coming to. Only had the van a few weeks. Annoyingly although it has 70k on the clock the engine is only about 20k old. Obviously they didn't change the fly wheel.

There are plenty of independent garages that specialise in clutch and flywheel replacements. I had an A4 DMF with clutch replaced a couple of years ago for a total of 630.00 parts and labour.
If I were you I’d shop around and definitely replace the clutch at the same time.

Hi was this definitely the flywheel in the end my van is making the same noise
No, the fly wheel was goosed but when they re-assembled the noise persisted. It turned out to be the high pressure fuel pump. Hope its not the same for you because that in itself is an expensive repair.

Thanks for the reply I’m thinking what ever it is it’s going to be expensive I have only had the van 3 months
