Mini Awning Ideas?

I’ve been thinking about devising a mini awning that would allow the side door to be left during wet weather.
It would need to keep the open doors inner side dry and protect the door opening. Preferably not rails screwed through the body, magnetic attachment preferable.
Obviously only suitable with good old vertical rain not the horizontal stuff and mild wind conditions.
Has anybody done this already?
I’m certainly not interested in a full awning as it doesn’t appeal.

Something like this goes up really easily, and is pretty cheap.
Needs an awning rail though.

I was thinking about a solution that doesn’t touch the ground, just attaching to the van and standing off the van by about a metre max’.
Just to keep the rain out of the van with the door open, not for sitting outside.

Another tailgate on the side would do the job:confused:

We looked at something like that, but worked out that it would cost more to make than what we could buy. The Sunncamp canopy in the picture cost about £100.

Looks fab - whats an awning rail? Would it attach to roof bars?

Our awning rail fits under the roof rail on the passenger side. Will see if I have a picture (but they are very common).

And no, it only fits to an awning rail.

The other thing I would add is how often do you actually get vertical rain in the UK :)
Some sides to a canopy definitely help.
