Looking at buying a T6.1

Hi everyone

l am just in the process of working out the specification of my T6.1
lnitially l went for the Start Line but by the time l specced it up l was nearly at the price of the High Line, which has most things as standard.
l decided on the 150ps engine, even though it's a massive £4,000 more than the base 90ps
l would like the DSG gearbox and second row seats but it takes the price over my maximum budget of £35,000
That's including VAT which sadly l can't get back as l am not VAT registered.
Delivery has been quoted as nine months from date of order, which seem to be the way of things at the moment.

Yes l've looked but l want glazed rear doors, two side doors and satnav in the spec.
lt's the two side doors that's the sticking point, few have that option.
l did see one which had all that plus the rear seats, but it was a near new 2021 and out of my price range.

Shuttles have two doors as standard, we have always had two and find it very useful.

The new 110 engine is ok, have your tried one?

l tried the 150ps and it was superb. lf l bought the 110ps l would always be wishing l had gone for the 150ps !!

What's the actual difference, is is just software, or are there mechanical differences between the 90ps, 110ps and 150ps?
Also l would like the 6 speed gearbox and l believe this comes with the 150ps

This van will replace my trusty Land Rover Defender 110 and l plan to keep it until l retire from business, which will be 10-15 years.

So l think it's important to get exactly the specification that l want.

The Shuttle, is that the one with the second row seats? Most of those seem to only have one side door.

Regarding satnav, l use it 5-10 times per day. ls the VW one not very good? lt would be a shame to have to sucker a phone to the windscreen every time l
got in the van.

Is there an alternative, can you use Apple Carplay?

Having ordered and currently waiting for mine I feel your pain looking at the options add up. I couldn’t justify the £1100 for the Sat Nav when you have Apple CarPlay as std (when phone plugged in). I wouldn’t worry too much about the glass on a pre registered or SH van, it’s easily added. I did question double sliders as for my drive/house the single slider is on the wrong side, but I thought DSG was a far better use of money!

Can you tell me how Apple Carplay works, does it use the van's media display for navigation via your Smartphone?

I use the Android version of the apple one every day, when you plug you phone in it allows you to access your phones services like Maps, messaging and music and displays it on the stereo.

No that will be fine, thank you, it's probably saved me £1,300 !

The configurator won't let me remove the option. lt bounces you back to the options list where it's still selected, with seemingly no way forward.

The message that comes up doesn't make any sense. There's no other "choices", nothing else is
selected in the media configuration because selection of the "Discover Media" nav option deletes all the other options from the list.

l guess l will have to start over with a new configuration.

As said above ditch the OEM say nav. I had it in my last van, now I use Carplay with either google maps or Waze. Both show the picture on the vw screen and turn by turn directions on the phone.

Use the money saved and get DSG.

Please talk to me about DSG.
ls it worth the extra over the six speed manual transmission.
l've never had an automatic transmission except on my Porsche 928 S4
How does it work?

DSG is out of my price range, it's around £2,500 extra.
l worked out how to remove nav from the configuration
Even the salesman agreed that it wasn't worth the money and it's better to pair your phone with the standard media unit.

The van specification is as follows

T28 Highline SWB 150ps 6 speed
Pure Grey

Heated washer jets
Cab carpet
Rubber covering in load compartment
Glazed tailgate with HRW/RWW
Heated seats
Full bulkhead with window
Tailgate locking from outside

The RRP is £38,000 and l am just waiting for their best quote, l will update when l get it.

I know you have a budget but if you’re planning on keeping it long term I would definitely consider going for led headlights Personally I also love the dsg gearbox and I think once you’ve driven one it’s hard to go back to a manual but as you say the options get expensive!

Here's my tuppence:

You dont need the satnav as others have said. I use the android link on my Samsung and it works perfectly. In fact better than the built in satnav in my rangerover. Plus i hear the OEM version has shocking software and isnt at all intuitive.

150 is a great choice of engine. More than enough power unless you want to race cars on the motorway.

Dont have DSG myself as I prefer a manual. If you havent had an auto before, id ask yourself why you are thinking of spending the extra? Whats the benefit you're after?

Highline vs startline - aside from AC, you get a better looking van with colour coded bumpers and mirrors, plus parking sensors.

Depending on what you will be using it for, a factory order allows you to swap bench seat for a single passenger at no cost. Factory swivels are also ridiculous cheap (about £130 each from memory) and thats a lot cheaper than retro fitting a single passenger swivel

And if you can stretch to LED, do it.

Lastly, shop around and dont just go to the local dealer. You should be aiming for around 16-18% discount (a touch more if you're really lucky) , so dont believe the blarney from dealers that they cant get that low. Some will, so shop around til you find the ones who will. Distance shouldnt be a barrier as the discount will outweigh that. Plus youll.find that some dealers will include delivery to you anyway. Dealers that i know that have been very competitive are Ipswich Van Centre and Heritage in Bristol. There will be others and it's worth the effort as you may be very pleasantly surprised.

Finally, if delivery time is important to you, check if they have factory allocation and which build month they are offering you. If they cant tell you, they are likely overselling against their allocation and you could be waiting a year - yes really!

You are unlikely to find a stock van with that spec with a discount, so next best option is to ask if they have any on order, which arent yet sold..if so, you should be able to update the order and will have a van thats already in the build pipeline which may save you months of waiting.
