So today I got a telematics device to plug into my van.
Now despite the fact having my driving style monitored was never something I was even remotely interested in, the developments in technology now mean that its actually a pretty useful bit of kit.
The box itself isnt linked to my insurance policy so even if I get a bad rating it wont ever be used against me as its my data. However if I drive well it could be used to make up to a 40% saving on your premium.
It plugs directly into the OBD port so no messing about wiring it into the van.
The bit I am really interested are as follows
It has the ability to record personal and business mileage. It learns when journeys are personal (even within working hours) and keeps a log which I can then download and use to claim back mileage costs. It tracks all journeys and speeds so if anyone else drives your van/car you can see if they are driving it like a nutter etc
In the event of an accident it records gforce, speed at impact and location etc so would be able to help proving liability. If you rolled the van or had a serious accident then the emergency services would be contacted and you location provided giving you peace of mind especially if you drive alone or in remote locations.
It shows fault codes much like carista and also lets you know when service and MOT’s are due.
As it tracks the van continously through GPS I can see where the vehicle is at all times and in the event that its stolen I can see where its gone (subject to it not being removed - very much doubt it would be even noticed.)
It can also send a notification if the vehicle is moved - great for if you leave your vehicle for long periods or go away.
It also records where its parked so at festivals or Camperjam etc its easy to find it.
Im not trying to sell this, I just thought the capabilities may not be something people would know about and may help give a more balanced view of what they offer.
