Leisure Battery Health

I don't think my leisure battery is charging / holding charge. How do I check the health of the leisure battery without it costing £££ in a garage?

Manbatt also offer this drop test. Sealed batteries can't be checked..
I have had 2 batteries now that would only charge 60% then fail.

How is is setup to charge?

Leisure battery is charged as I drive. But the main vehicle battery died a month or so ago and was replaced. It wasnt holding a charge over 30%ish.. and I wander if it would of affected the leisure battery? I've checked connections and the fridge works fine when I use it, other than when I'm parked up overnight and the leisure battery doesn't seem to last as long as it used to? I'm not electrically minded so I don't understand terminology so please forgive me....

Firstly If you have a multimeter that can measure current, then disconnect a battery terminal and put the meter in series and measure the current drawer when you think it is all off and check that there is nothing consuming power you weren’t expecting.
Then move on to checking they are being charged whilst driving and not only on hookup (you didn’t describe how you operate so just covering everything).
One or 2 leisure batteries? If 2 has a fuse on the second battery blown (common on the California) as this will half your capacity.
Do you charge with a relay or a dc-dc charger as a split charge relay will not get your leisure battery over 80%

Just a few thoughts...

I thought I had answered it? While I drive..... as I also mentioned, I'm not electrically qualified so I don't know the correct terminology.....

Can you ask the converter which charging device they installed which does this ?

It’s difficult to offer advice without more info.

is this a factory installed leisure battery? if so what is the exact make model van, that will tell us the charging system....

OR HAS IT BEEN FITTED AFTER THE FACT BY A CONVERTER?

Flipping hell guys, let him catch his breath! The poor guy must be wishing that he had never asked!
You're right. I wish I never asked.....

It's Xmas period. Converter isn't in work so I can't ask him. But basically, as far as I know, I drive the van, the leisure battery is charged. There is a small box thing between my main battery and the leisure battery. When the engine is running, it has red light on it. Which I assume means it's charging the leisure battery. When the engine is off, the little light in the little box thing is off. That's it gents, that's all I know......

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately two things hinder me in taking your advice. Firstly, I don't have a multimeter and secondly I have absolutely no f***ing idea what yr on about regarding measuring current drawer, things consuming power or putting a meter in series! Lol. I am not a mechanic, I am not an electrician...... but seriously though and no harm meant, thanks for taking the time to try and help.

Sounds like a VSR to me.

(Split charge relay)

No problem; maybe an appointment with Martyn @travelvolts for him to “lnspect” and advise?

Yes, that deffinately sounds like a Durite type VSR which is not charging the battery properly for you. Your converter should have fitted a DC-DC charging system.
