iPhone 5s not compatible with factory head unit

Does anybody know why when I connect my iphone 5s via the usb port, the stereo states that 'device is not supported'. Is this due to a software update required, if so, how do you do this?

I think my 6SE comes up with that and only charges on it. It connects and will play music via Bluetooth. The iPod works fine with the usb

My bluetooth is fine, so its not a huge problem, typical Apple to be honest. I can say that having used Apple products for over 25 years...haha..

My iPhone 6 works ok on the latest software. However is the iphone 5 still supported with the latest IOS version updates ? If not you might be stuffed. My I Phone 4s stopped being able to update 18/24 months ago

No, 5s is current. How do you update the software on the stereo?
