How low on 19inch wheels?

Im going to fit 19inch wheels on a T6.1 SWB.
I'm thinking 40mm lower.

Is this enough? Or should I go for 55mm?

Can you help me decide with some pictures.
Thanks!

Hi,

40mm would work, but it really depends on what you want from your van and suspension. How you will use it, the stance you’re going for and what your priorities are. There are many different options available. Are you thinking a set of lowering springs, lowering springs + upgraded shocks or height adjustable coilovers?

If you give some details of how you will use the van and what you want from the new setup I can give more specific advice.

If you’re not sure how you want the van to look and therefore how low you want it you might find some inspiration in this thread:

Many thanks for coming back to me.
For me, I just want to sweeten the look, nothing radical. Its going to be a camper and plan on nice long trips through Europe. But it does need to look nice (obviously!).

I picked 19inch wheels because they can accommodate slightly bigger profile tyres, which should equal a more comfortable ride. But looking at photos I can barely tell the difference.

Just lowered springs, not coil overs.
I guess from what I have explained I'm expecting to go for 40mm, but with 19inch wheels, just wondered if that was enough.

Springs only will always be a compromise.
Money well spent on a decent suspension setup could be the best money you spend on your vehicle.
If you’re local come and have a go in one of our demo vans, we run various setups.
If you are T30 or under there is no better setup for ride and value for money than the STX setup.

Thanks for the prompt response.
I guess you're in Bognor Regis, going by the name which unfortunately is not local.

But out of interest what do the STX cost?

Hello. Yes correct in the sunniest town in the UK.

We charge £1079+vat fitted including a full hunter alignment when completed to ensure its 100% perfect. They are made by KW and basically a KW V1 in a galvanised body. They are one of our more popular upgrades to T30 and under.

We can also offer these as mail order but if you’re not too far away, offer this as a drive in drive out service with a courtesy vehicle so you can explore the local area whilst we work on your van.

Ok. Thanks for the tip. I will talk to the guy doing my conversion, see what he's planning.

With your requirements I would recommend Koni Special Active Shocks matched with 40mm H&R lowering springs. I never recommend lowering on springs only because it is detrimental to ride quality, but I understand that for some customers it's all the budget will allow. The ST X kit that has already been recommended is outstanding (we also supply and fit those when the application is right for them), but for fixed 40mm lowering with ride comfort as the priority they aren't the best solution, the Koni Special actives are. There is no better ride quality than the special actives. The ST X kit is a great solution for anyone who may want to play around with the height adjustability, but it sounds like you won't need that, so you're paying extra for something you don't need.

Another great aspect of the Koni/H&R setup is that we can choose various different spring rate options to take account of the extra weight of the camper conversion and how it is distributed, to help ensure the stance, ride and handling are all as good as they can possibly be whilst maintaining the 40mm drop you're after.

I appreciate that I am even further from you than Oli and as such I'm unlikely to be supplying and fitting this suspension for you, but advice costs nothing and I always like to make sure that people are aware of all the options and most importantly which option is the best for their needs.

Cheers, Chris.

Many thanks for the advise, much appreciated.
Out if interest, where are you based?

We're in Somerset, it's a beautiful part of the country. You could even get the conversion finished, pop down to see us, get your perfect new suspension fitted and then spend a couple of nights at any number of lovely local places to try the camper out!

haha - Very tempting! Beautiful part of the country, and we will be sure to get down there next summer.
But I'm looking to get conversion done lock stock. And locally to be honest, in the event of any issues.

Enjoy the camper once it's yours, many happy times ahead!

As I've always said try and get out and try all options for yourself. Only you will be able to decide what is best for you, we can only advise from our experience,

I certainly wouldn't discount any option till you've tried them all, and there are some very good options out there for you to choose from. We fit upward of 10 suspension kits a week, all to different vehicles, with the owners all after different results, there is never one solution to best fit all.

Good luck in your search, suspension can be a minefield but with the right experience and guidance you can make the correct decision. Luckily for you there are excellent options from the following manufacturers;

Bilstein
Eibach
KW/ST Suspension
Koni
H&R
Twin Projekt

And dont forget wherever you go to get it properly aligned afterwards, to get the best out of your investment.
