Hi
Have a set of 16” T6 alloys in the garage, which I’m thinking about using as my winter wheels, but would like them to look a bit more beefy than standard.

I’ve read through a few posts on A/T’s on 17in rims, but not found anything (yet) on 16”s. Has anyone seen anything, they could point me at. Looking to fit something like a Cooper A/T 3 which is a bit less ‘off road’ that a BF Goodridge A/T :)

Any advice welcome and thanks!

Hello
I don't think the 17 coopers AT3 are available in 235/60/17 now, and I'm not sure they will be again. These coopers are a great tyre imo for a T6, just the right balance and good in colder weather/ice etc. Just no good for a T32 as the loadings not enough.
Are you 2wd or 4wd? T28?/T30?/T32?
You may which to look also at All-Season options and or Cross-Over the tyres

Have a look at
https://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/r...Ang_pro_Seite=10&rsmFahrzeugart=ALL&weiter=10

The General Grabber AT3; and Yokohama Geolander AT GO15 are both good, and the AT3 are been spoken about on this forum(18" size). Just beware of their loading 100 = 800KG = Stamped Maximum axel load 1600kg; usually your rear axel will have the higher rated maximum load. I would very strongly recommend and indeed it may be a legal requirement that your tyres are capable of carrying the maximum load that your vans axels are rated to.
The 235/60/16 size is just the same size as VW OEM trolling radius, so no changes there.

ditto this tyre

This is imo a very good price for a Toyo which is a respected tyre manufacturer.

Now the link above is interesting, Personally I like a slightly larger tyre and the 235/65/16 looks so much better on the vehicle, it fills the arches better imo; gives you a little more ground clearance and loading wise these tyres are incredible upto 121 rating = 1450kg/wheel=2900kg/axel; I think your van would snap in half before these tyres let go; not that you need any load rating this high, and the side walls maybe too stiff for a comfortable ride - although I've never tried them. Some of these tyres have All Season rating so good in winter and summer. But these tyres are not really All_Terrain,
Michelin Agilis CrossClimate 235/65 R16 115/113 R C » Oponeo.co.uk - You just now these tyres will be great and probably last 40k miles+, but they are expensive
Nokian WeatherProof C 235/65 R16 121/119 R C » Oponeo.co.uk
I liked Nokin's :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Michelin Latitude Cross 235/60/16 are a brilliant tyre load rating is fine, they work really well in all conditions carry Mud&Snow rating, not actually given the All Season the 3PMSF yet, but lots of people use them in winter in Europe. Look beefy, but not quite as Beefy as an AT

You might want to check the speed rating of any tyre as well such S or T etc.
And whilst it's not normally an issue, you may wish to let you insurers now if you fit a non standard tyre

Oh and to get the look you're after, i think you'll need wheel spacers
I've got 25mm on each wheel
Some fit 25mm on each front and 35mm/40mm on each rear wheel
Always go with TUV approved such as HR+ or similar

If you go the AT route, just remember that not all AT's are good in ICE/COLD conditions; because really you need lots of sipes (those small cuts often zig-zaggy) and a compliant rubber compound to work well in winter conditions

Please let us know your thoughts

Nice, just need some black wheel arch trims to finish it off .. ;)

Thanks very much first off :)! There more information here than I thought I’d get back, so really appreciate the insights.

I’ve a T28 150DSG FWD van, that has now been converted to a camper with Hilo roof/Uber Flux sliding RIB and Evo furniture package.

I’ll need to take sometime to review all this great information and work out what’s the best route for me. As I said, I’ve the original wheels in the garage and thought why not use these, rather than going for new wheels as well as tyres.

I like the look of this van below, which looks to me, like it’s using the 16” Highline alloys. I don’t intend to lift the van, as it’s mainly going to be for winter conditions etc.

Think I need to work out what tyre/size/spacer combination I’d needed etc as I want to ensure I have a safe package, that will not only give the look, but be up to the job

Yes BFG AT KO2
215/65/16 103load=875kg/wheel S=112mph
215/70/16 100load=800kg/wheel R=106mph
225/70/16 102load=850kg/wheel R=106mph

so the 215/65 are a standard size for a VW T6
215/70 a bit larger
225/70 a bit larger still

Its strange that the 215/65 has better duties in terms of speed and load. Normally a bigger tyre has better duties!!!!

The bigger tyres look better to me aesthetically, without too much downside at these sizes, other than the speed ratings, which you will need to take a view on.

Again thank for the info Chris:thumbsup:

The tyres fitted to my alloys are 205/60/16C but will look at your suggestions for sure!

Blimey those tyres are tiny, I didn't know they came that small on a T6
are you sure they aren't 205/65/16?

so if 205/65/16 is your base tyre
the 215/65/16 has an increase radius/speedo/gearing of 1.9% and extra 6.5mm of rubber all the way around
215/70/16 4.9% 17.3mm of rubber all the way around
225/70/16 6.7% 24.3mm

I've run slightly larger tyres than the 225/70/16 and there are others on her who have done also; the 24.4mm lift in hight, could actually be compared to 24.3-6.5= 18mm(ish) because lots of VW vans actual come with the 215/65/16's; and the same can be said of the radius 6.7-1.9= 4.8%, again not uncommon on this forum.
With the wheel spacers you should be fine, (so long as you don't drop it say more than 30mm in the future); also some people have had to slightly re-mould the plastic wheel arch liners with a hot air gun (not a hard job); but I think you would be fine with out.

Thanks Chris ;)

My is lowered on 30mm VW springs. Where’s good place to get the spacers from? I’m going to Bus Fest on Saturday so there may be someone I could get these from. Also would you need new extra long wheel bolts?

Cheers

VW T5 H&R TRAK+ WHEEL SPACERS Total Track Widening = 50mm (25mm Each Side)

Europarts talk about total track width so 50mm=25mm each side
The important thing in my opinion is TUV approved and Hub-centric (which is the thin wall part that fits into the existing hub to ensure they align perfectly, and will not come loose.
The 25mm system comes with all the bolts you need; a set of counter-sunks that bolt the spacer to the hub; a set of slightly shorter bolts to bolt the wheel to the spacer. If you have locking security wheel bolts you will need to cut/grind a few mm of these to reuse them, other wise they will push up against the flange of the van hub without being tight.
You will need two sets of the spacers as they are usually sold in pairs.
The 40mm system does need the security bolt cutting down, but 40mm is too big for the front axel imo

I'm not saying Europarts are the cheapest, and they do often have promotions on
some items.

Oh and if you are searching online, its often better to look for VW T5 spacers, as they are the same as T6, but many online suppliers did not bother re-listing them on their websites when the T6 came out.

When you look at the tyre size, you may just want to look at just how heavy your van is in full running order; does it look reasonably level, or does the rear sag!. If so you might not want to go for the very largest tyre, if you are thinking of up-sizing.

@Dannyb6467 tyres are 235/55/18's I think which sits between the 215/70 - 225/70 in terms of hight/rolling radius.

Thanks for all the wise words Chris. I’m going to Bus Fest this weekend so will have look round to see if there are vans with these sort of wheel/tyre combo’s, plus I sure they’ll be a few businesses there who I can look at too.

Really appreciate the help.....you’re a top bloke :)

Hi guys new member today 1st post just fitted BFG A T KO2 s on my T 30 LWB blue motion T/line 215 / 65 /16 i got stuck on a grass verge and the guys pushing me off dented the back door panel... seen a couple of vans get stuck with standard tires the B F Gs are a 50 - 50 winter summer tyre and rated top marks in testing as an all rounder the smaller wheels fitted on the blue motion is to help stream line the van. throws the speedo out 5 mph over 40 mph the 70mm tyre would of corrected this but i cant have the van any higher due to a over head shutter and roof bars .. will keep you posted to how i get on with them .... looks a great forum get to meet some of you in the future PS just in the planning stage for my conversion.. theres not a lot of room lol
