DPF blocked due to low fuel

Hello all
My van t6.1 has been in limp mode because of a dpf filter is blocked.

I have taken it to vw garage Peterborough and they have said that it's because the fuel had been run low and because of this they are refusing to do the work under warranty.

I took delivery of the vehicle in Feb 2022 (not even a year old).

The quote for the work is over £3,000 (that's right 3 grand)!

I'm not me mechanically minded and don't know about this stuff other that I need some really good and accurate advice.

Ad blue has been topped up in line with recommendations and fuelled appropriately.
 
So were you running the van below a quarter tank of fuel for some time?

You can call out VW assist and he will perform a force generation on the roadside.

We would really need to see a scan of the soot level to be sure.
 
As above regen is disabled below 1/4 tank, due to increased fuel consumption during regen.

Agreed, but that isn't described in the handbook for my van. I just picked it up from this forum.

Is it definitely in other people's van manuals ?
If not, I would go back to them and say "how was I supposed to know".

The manual does warn regen is interrupted when the yellow fuel light is on. I only know this because I was looking for it, as I didn’t want my new van to go the way of a previous car that I got rid of due to DPF fail.

Faced with that sort of bill and the garage firmly refusing to deal with it under warranty, I would, as others have done (there is a topic on here) where you flush it out yourself and get the regenerations working again.

I had the same issue last year. Not sure why it was blocked. I had extended warrenty with VW. The VW garage (which shall remain nameless) said that it would be covered under the warrenty but would check with VW. The garage came back and said that it wasn't covered. Cost me £1200.

Has to pay as away from home.

Call V W warrenty to ask what I need to be mindful of if this happened again. They looked and said they had no record of the claim. They called me back 3 days later and paid in full. It looks like the garage didn't speak with them. Contact VW directly.
 
If the soot level is borderline, there are ways to get it to regen via ODIS. I do this often under controlled and monitored conditions for quite a few garages. If it’s too far beyond then the DPF either needs to be removed and cleaned or replaced
 
Hi guys thanks for all of your input. I've just got the report..as I said I'm not technically minded but the soot calculation is saying 40 as below

The forced limit is 50g so they should do a forced regen.

So should I call roadside assist back out and cancel the alternative I have just booked..? Loz much appreciated you seem like you know what you are talking about?!

I would, and make sure you request a VW tech, not just the (RAC or AA tech who you can get depending on who has the contract at the moment), and he should be able to do a forced regen in the street (I had mine done)
 
So the current situation is..




Another suitably qualified technician has tried and failed to do a re gen...! What are my Next steps /options ?

As in post #3, get a specialist cleaning company involved or DIY back flush.

My advice is to steer away from any company that says they can clean a DPF without removing it.

Short of there being other external factors such as low fuel or faulty sensor, that van should go through a service regen without issue.

That’s not guesswork, I action service regens, including on transporters, regularly with ODIS
 
Thanks. I mean i had been fuelling a little here and there and it in all honesty has been topped up at prob a quarter of a tank at a time. However its over half now after reading it deep inside the manual that regen won't happen under a 1/4 tank and the advice on here.

The soot levels are 40 g.
I've been advised to scream and shout at vw uk...so that's the plan currently.. I'm just a regular driver and have had no advice as to how to manage this DPF....

It seems a shocker to me and I am left wondering how many other people like me are out there with new van and dpf issues ?
