H4 headlight upgrade to...

Hello guys, hope you are all well.

I have the awful H4 candle powered bulbs and would be happy to have them upgraded this year but not sure how. I`ve checked the forum and read people suggesting to just change the headlights instead of messing about with bulbs. Any recommendations or links for what to upgrade to? Road legal of course as I failed an MOT last year using LED bulbs I got whilst in Norway. 😬🫣 Norway has no limits on full beam lights in case you are wondering.

2016 Transporter with H4.

Cheers in advance,

Dav

Have a search for ‘H4 to H7 Upgrade’, there is a massive thread that answers every conceivable question on the subject.

In essence, it’s change the bulbs, fit H7 headlamps or fit LED headlamps. Each has pros/cons and supporters/detractors.

It is certainly true that many on here have converted over to H7 Headlamps perhaps this is not possible Norway due to legal regulations?

A couple of things that you could do. Have the headlight alignment checked. Ask the guy doing it to obviously stay legal but many people setting lights up I have noticed just rush through the process as him or her to achieve the best that they can do.
We can align bulbs our selves and instructions on low beam aim are set out in many places. Just find a level area against a garage door at the prescribed distance and mark out the door adjust your beams to the drawn or taped lines or cross. I do not have much level ground my self so take a white sheet and put it over a farm gate and use something useful to mark the x for low beam.
Not sure about your vehicle if it has another beam in addition to main or not.
H4 Bulbs Do you have auto supply shops or is only via Amazon anyway you could look for reviews of Halogen H4 Bulbs and see how you get on.
On a quick look I did notice LED kept cropping up also but for got to add Halogen into the search term The EU is changing its stance towards LED retro fit However their is a proviso! Available regulated bulbs are available I believe for specific vehicle not quite sure now about that but certainly Philips and Osram Have for replacing Halogen and are provided with certification. Not sure if H4 is covered Hi and H7 are covered. If you try the Philips site they will have an article covering Halogen to LED replacement bubs. Osram may also but I think Philips are the main lead.

These bulbs have not been ratified in the UK unfortunately not sure about Norway. Please let us know how you get on!

Trucks and cars drive around here like starships during winter and there is no limit to full beams so people can go nuts.

I`ll be back in a few months so could get any kits or have it installed there. Is transporter HQ the place to go for headlight upgrades or any other recommendations?

Cheers gents,

I have just changed H4 Phillips to osram nightbreakers, see before and after here

Not sure what bulbs were in mine when I got it (other than being H4) but I went for the Philips GT200 and, like you, see a big improvement over stock.
Road legal too and I don’t get flashed by oncoming cars so clearly not causing too much fuss for other road users.
I don’t feel the need to upgrade any further.
