Hi All

I have a 2016 t6 which I bought with h&r coilovers fitted, their is a knocking noise when driving at slow speed, especially when I reverse out of the drive. I have checked it and all looks good, has anybody had any experience with h&r coilovers and maybe had the same issue?

I am thinking of changing the droplinks first to see if that helps.

Thanks

It wont be the coil overs !!!! we have fitted hundreds of these and never had a problem let alone a warranty on one yet. Its human nature i guess to blame something foreign on the car ? Easy test to do is take a drop link off and drive it ( just one side obviously ) , Drop links on transporters are highly likely to be the noise they are a pest in reality .

Depends where the knocking is from - front or back. Front could be top mounts or drop links. Back could be the lower suspension rubber mounts. Or it could be that it’s not fitted correctly - seeing a lot of this lately.

The noise is from front so I will try the drop links first and see if that sorts it out.

I fitted the new drop links today, at first I thought the noise had gone away but after a drive, the knock is still there at slow speed on the driveway. Any ideas of what to try next?

Answered previously as above. And best to get it checked by someone who knows to make sure they’ve been fitted correctly. So many issues will ill fitting coilovers!

I have the same problem at the moment, was ok until MOT had it jacked up and has knocked ever since. Had it jacked up today and there is movement in the top mount so I’m going to order some new ones and go from there.

What sort of knock do u have on your van? Mine only appears at slow speed like reversing out of the driveway or cornering at slow speed.

What top mounts are you going to fit?

When you say are they fitted correctly, what are the issues you are talking about in terms of fitting mistakes?

It’s like a metal on metal banging at low speed and does sound like it’s coming from the top. Has new drop links which are nice and tight and I can rock the van and hear the noise sometimes.
I’m going to order Meyle heavy duty

Rear springs fitted upside down is the most common. Drop links over tightened and loose, they should be correctly torqued. Adjusters left loose. Just heavy handedness in general or lack of knowledge of coilovers. And this so all by so called suspension experts or main dealers. . And don’t get me started on alignment. It is paramount not only when fitting coilovers but also for the general health of your vehicle, and again so many ‘suspension experts’ not doing it!! We have had brand new vehicles on our hunter with the alignment miles out and steering wheels off centre. Correct alignment is key to a good setup.

Genuine top mounts are perfect

Drop links only have stress on them when one wheel is moving up and down differently to the other. So they generally make noises when turning lock to lock and hi castor and camber angles are experienced ,. Climbing up Kerbs is a motion that can trigger noise. The drop links can be faulty in the actual ball joint if there is wear , but the metal click or knock is actually the bolt moving around in the mounting hole , If unsure remove one side only and drive the vehicle , if the noise is still there look elsewhere , if the noise stops. Check the drop links top and bottom both sides . Another noise on front suspension is d bushes on ARB. But that tends to be more a thud not a metallic rattle .

Some of the issues. Referred to with coil overs being incorrectly Fitted is correct. This isn’t that the coil overs are at fault but often wrongly applied by specialist suppliers . if they only sell , or Offer sleeve over or coil over kits they tend to use them for every customer and it’s not always suitable and doesn’t always satisfy customer needs. 70 % of the kits we do ARENT coil overs !!!

we have seen sleeve over kits that are recommended to do 40 to 70 mm but the vehicle sat at 90 mm down . This means. Of course the kit isn’t fit for purpose if it’s too low and fully adjusted to the highest settings . Clients telling us of some specialists wasting 5 to 6 hours on an install ( that should take 90 mins ). Trying to overcome this issue , the answer would be remove it and fit something fit for purpose , but if you don’t have such a solution this is a problem . The lasting issue with a kit fitted and sitting too low is that you can statically set the wheel alignment to spec , but every bump the vehicle hits will throw the alignment out as the control arms arc to positions it shouldn’t go to normally . this can’t be fixed and will wear tyres . Who’s at fault here. the kit or the supplying company ??

the VW dealers of course are just the worst and we had a delivery mileage van in this week 60 miles on the clock and rear spring rubbers shot. Not fitted correctly . We had a brand new California with VW 30 mm springs Fitted. It was a T6.1 but springs were T6. And one rear was upside down and one front shock loose , the biggest problem was it was 80 mm down at the rear and 60 in front. , ??? NOT FIT for purpose as I said . who got the blame ? the product ! who was at fault ? the supplier !
The main point to hi light is that coil overs or sleeve overs ( cheap imitation of a coil over ) are actually called Ride Height adjustable kits by the industry. that means they are designed to adjust height !!!! It doesn’t mean they are there to adjust because 400 kilos of camper weight has been added And a saggy back end needs a pre tensioned spring to hold the extra weight up. This is the very reason that a lot of rear springs Break. When the rear springs are pre tensioned too far to lift a heavier vehicle than they are designed to carry they lose their tension or break ,
Must state that the better “ Ride height adjustable kits “ proper coil overs now have springs that can cope with the camper weight and can be adjusted to with in the spec that they are designed to do. Research well and always check for problems that clients are experiencing and don’t just listen to the good reviews .
