They can be stripped and powder coated yes. You could try spraying it, but powder coat is more hard wearing.

I think it’s to do with the extra weight it has to lift. The non powered version has stronger struts to lift the tailgate so I would assume it puts additional load onto the motors?

I did think that, but there is a version recommended for the electric tailgate. Perhaps it’s a lighter rack?

No one official seems to have an answer as to why this version (version 1) shouldn't be used with an electric tailgate.

From what I've noticed, this version protrudes out further from the rear of the van than the type 2 version.

Someone ( can't remember who) fitted a spoiled on the roof alongside this type of rack. When I tried that with my type 2 rack the whole rack sat far too close to the top of the tailgate. There was no chance of the spoiler fitting with the rack in place.

It may be as simple as that, and that alone may be enough to affect the electric Rams on the powered tailgate..

Just my two penneth worth..

So as a newbie this was a concern for me I wanted to fit a spoiler and the correct bike rack is this actually possible ? Does anybody have the ABT spoiler and the bike rack as it looks like it might fit between the spacing of the spoiler?

Apparently it will, according to @Jon Birkett
Hi I have just been on the Vansport web site looking for some side bars rather than pay the £500 + cost at VW and noted they are ABT dealers looked at the ABT spoiler and
it says that it is designed to fit with a genuine VW accessory cycle rack. Result as it now looks like this is the only option if you want a spoiler.
I have got version 1 on my electric tailgate. No problem so far. Fits perfectly and open and close no bother. I feel comfortable to suggest this rack for electric tailgate.
