For those who didn't go with a Rock n Roll Bed - What layout did you go for?

My Transporter T6 is almost at the "shell that's ready to have furniture" stage. I'm going to be building pretty much all of it myself which is most definitely a mistake :p but also gives me much more flexibility. When it comes to the bed I keep going back and forth on making do with the bed going width ways which would max out at about 135w x 150l (cm) (note: i'm 6ft1) or having it go length ways to get about 120w x190l (cm) out of it.

Keen to see pictures or hear thoughts of what others have done when they've gone down the bespoke route.
 
California bed (on rails), very flexible set up. I‘m planning on making some mod’s to make it easier to remove the double seat.
I think your choice will depend on how many certified seats you want in the van and budget.
One thing to bear in mind is the re-sale value, whatever is fitted needs to be legal, well made and appealing to as many potential buyers as well as yourself.
 
Only having the 2 seats up front (potentially may switch to a double passenger but most likely not).

Plan is to build the bed to be able to take advantage of pull out storage from under the bed via the tailgate
 
If you dont need belted seats in the rear you have more options. I built my own, my main requirements being that I can fit (i'm 6'4) and that I can get my bike easily in the van too. Its an ikea mattress 1400x1880. The entire bed / sofa part is also removable for the odd occasion I need an almost full size van. Making everything yourself means you can do what you want

Certainly have ! Settled on the traditional layout in the end albeit with a more pod like makeup.

I was a bit disappointed to discover that removal of my double California seat required either removal of the B pillar trim or the seat squab (in a SWB). Not something that my converter felt the need to mention…
 
We worked our way in thought through almost every conceivable option before settling on an install from the Pluy Guys. Was way cheaper than any of the other options we'd considered and is better suited to our use case. Slide out pieces bridge from the drivers side unit to the passenger side. Check out The Ply Guys

This is very similar to what I have in mind but plan to have a kitchen running width ways by the cabin with a pull out drawer that comes out of the slide door side

I think you'll find the ply guys have a design for that...

I wasn’t aware of that, so far I’ve only derailed it and put some padding under it. Definitely worth stripping the seat as far as possible as standing in the middle makes it easier to handle. As far as I’m aware the best way out is through the tailgate…..yet to be proven.

It wasn’t possible to push the seat far enough forward to disengage the rear feet, hence it couldn’t be fully derailed and removed.

I managed to get mine completely out of the rails, I then rested it on boards up against the back of the front seats to get the space I needed.

If you are good at woodwork, i have a metal shaped U frame for sale, built it myself but then couldnt find anyone to do the woodwork and realised i dont have the ability or tools to do it myself!
