Fitting rails to ceiling

I fitted some aluminium rails to my T6.1 ceiling so that I can attach a surfboard shelf to them. I thought I'd post the details here in case anyone else finds them useful.

I created some spacers (33mm tall) to allow the straight rail to be mounted to the curved ceiling.

Bare ends of and aluminium rail don't look great so I created some end caps that clip on the end and are easily removable.

I used the following hardware:

  • 2 lengths of 1040mm aluminium rail (80x16 profile). Source: RS PRO Silver Aluminium Profile Strut, 80 x 16 mm, 8mm Groove, 3000mm Length | RS. I drilled 4 holes in each length, matching the position of the available holes in the ceiling panel.
  • M6 rivnuts (I had to widen the existing holes in the ceiling panel slightly using an 8mm drill bit, then used primer to ensure the bare metal doesn't rust)
  • 4 x 25mm M6 hex socket bolts for the rail ends
  • 4 x 60mm M6 hex socket bolts for the rail centers
I've uploaded the spacers and end cap models here: Ceiling rail hardware for 80x16 rails in VW Transporter T6.1 by donnyturns | Download free STL model | Printables.com

Happy to answer any questions. First project in my new T6.1 and pretty happy with how it went.

Well done, looks to work really well. I've often thought this would be a good way to transport skis, paddles etc.
