102PS Engine vibration after remap

Hi all,
Hoping some one can often any advise,

I’ve recently had a few bits done to my t6 t30 102bhp with a camper conversion.
I had a new cambelt and water pump fitted,
New 20” wheels is with Goodyear F1s,
Full alignment,
And a revo map (set on the higher map)
The work was done by a trusted trader on here so shouldn’t be any problems with that.
So the problem I seem to be experiencing is that when I’m driving along and I load the engine I get a nasty vibration which will shake the whole van. In 4th it will give a little brief vibration but in 5th if I say have it at 2000rpm at 50mph and go WOT it will start vibrating like feck so have to back off and drop it down a gear and drive around it. First to third are fine.
Does this sound like the map is a little to much for the drive train? Or has it just shown up another issue? On idle the engine sounds fine but is quite rattely when accerating which from searching could indicate dmf is ok but maybe clutch pressure plate could be weak. Having said that there’s no slipping.
Has anyone else with a similar setup experienced the same? Bit lost with it.

I would take it back to the company who did the upgrade. Revo have a good reputation, and should be able to sort it for you.
Out of interest, what power/torque did you end up with ?

Pete

Hi @Wrenners. Is yours the Euro 5 or Euro 6 (adblue) engine?

I ask as Revo have stopped doing re-maps on the Euro 6 102ps engine due to problems with turbos melting...!

Yes that’s why I decided on revo, seen it used a lot in the focus rs scene. It’s on a euro 5 65reg engine. Went from 102bhp up to the 167bhp/ 250ish lb ft map and has had this issue since the mapping. Where the map has a good rep I’m wondering if it’s shown something else up.

More likely the map is revealing an existing issue in the drivetrain which is prob going to be around the clutch/DMF
Talk to the garage and see what they say, maybe get the map removed to see how it goes and possibly until the issue is resolved ??

That’s kinda what I’m thinking may be happening. At 39k miles I’d hope it wasn’t that, but seems that vw’s dmf’s etc are not very reliable going by other posts. I’ve seen revo do a obd unit so may purchase one and dial it back with that until I can get it looked at.
Quite disappointing really.

Hi, have you any update on this issue?
This sounds exactly like mine. Had a remap yesterday, and now getting a vibration pulling up hills.

Check your engine mount rubbers, mine developed a slight vibration and it was diagnosed as a split rubber on the front engine mount.

Ok so im not sure if it’s exactly the same causes as I had but I have resolved the issues a good few months back. I spoke to the garage a couple of days after having the work done and asked them if it could possibly have been to do with the cam belt, but they said no chance of it being this. I then took it back to them after a short period and let them have it for the day, of which they then diagnosed it as having excessive backlash in fourth and fifth gear and it would need a gearbox rebuild which they quoted at £2000.
I spoke to a couple of reputable transmission specialists and they both said that it was impossible to diagnose this fault without actually taking the box apart and said that it was very unlikely that it is this as the fault appeared as soon as the work was done. They also both only charge half of the other quoted figure for a rebuild and fitting. They did say a good way to check for gearbox wear to that extent is to drain the oil and check for contamination. After this I came onto this site and searched for matching symptoms and all people said was of it being the DMF failing. So I went ahead and had the DMF and clutch changed. At the same time the oil was drained from the box and it was as clean as a whistle. Driveshafts also checked. After this I then changed all the engine and gearbox mounts. The front one was slightly split. Needless to say the original parts other than the split were fine. But hey at least I don’t need to worry about that anymore lol.
I consulted with Revo of which they assured me that the map wouldn’t be causing these problems.

So then I bit the bullet and changed the cam belt as fitted by the garage. On removal it was found that the large idler pulley was defective, as in the bearing was stiff and lumpy, and the tensioner fell into three pieces as it was pulled off the shaft.Neither part was likely to completely fail. It seems that the dragging bearing was sapping power from the engine and causing the vibration and the rattling was probably play in the defective spring tensioner.
New kit was fitted and it resolved all of the problems I was having. The van also felt so much better to drive.
Really happy with the van now, just a shame that the garage tried to take a few more thousand off me for fixing a healthy part and which wouldn’t have resolved it. And worst it was a problem they had caused, and even dismissed my query about it.

What I will add though is that remapped diesels need to be driven slightly differently, Driven more like a petrol engine with the revs higher up when you want to drive more sprightly. Think it’s where they move the power around. Google vibration after remap on Diesel engine and you’ll find some examples on it.

Good update! Thank you

I had my EU5 102 T6 REVO remapped last year. Only went to 140ps. I occasionally get a bit of judder if accelerating uphill in 4th from slower speed/revs - as @Wrenners suggests, if I wasn't lazy and dropped to 3rd first - no issue. the van is much better to drive with the remap, especially as I've added camper bits/weight.

Great write up on this issue.... glad you got to the bottom of it and really pleased you are happy with your van again.

Just a real shame that the ‘trusted trader’ on here didn’t have the knowledge or skill to put things right for you. Shame on them!
