Engine Battery Drain

So I’ve noticed that if I work on the van, as I do most weekends, the battery drains down to the point were it will barely turn over to start.

Ita when I have the doors open and maybe lock and unlock it a few times.
I have a Ctec D250SA battery charger fitted the works fine.
Iv also replaced all the interior lights with LEDs

Any thoughts? Because I’m thinking this mite become a real problem if I overnight in the thing.

Is it a battery drain or a dodgy battery ??
Many people have had issues with batteries if it’s the Moll EFB one fitted

It has an AGM battery fitted its the original but the van is a 67 plate so not that old. No idea if the battery is covered by the warranty now I think about it.

The rear interior lights have a shut off timer to stop the battery depleating....

Factory LEDS have a 60min ish timer...

Factory standard lights have a 20mins ish shut off timer....

So id have a look to see if the shut off timer are runn8ng properly..

Be mindful that blipping the Key
/ shutting/oprn8ng the door... will reset the timer again....

And obviously take note of all the details above.

If you will be regularly overnighting, it might be a good idea to consider a second battery in a leisure set up.

If you are using the media unit playing the radio whilst working on it, that does put a considerable drain on the starter battery that will only be 80% charged due to the bluemotion.

Get it to VW..... Mine is in at the moment being investigated for exactly the same issue .... Mine is only 13 months old and I'm not paying for a new battery .....

Vehicle batteries should last 5 to 7 years

It’s not a Moll battery is it ?

Pete

Yes . VW have diagnosed a battery fault .... but don’t have any onsite “as they not allowed to keep them”

Fingers crossed may get it back tomorrow ...

Really carp stuff from VW ....the staff handling this are doing their best ...

Vw have had mine with a battery fault for a week now

I wasn't having battery trouble but the van went in for another issue and they replaced the battery at the same time.

Oh crap can of worms anyone?

Turn out I do have an EFB starter battery. I had it tested at Halfords with one of their Lucas battery testers and it came up as a good battery.

I do have a leasure battery as I said in the OP.
I have a Ctec D250 SA charging it.

So the radio has a big power draw? It’s only the standard DAB radio.

An instantaneous type battery tester is limited in what it can check, to accurately measure capacity/storage requires a discharge test, this why VW take suspect vehicles and keep them to check properly
It may well be ok but I wouldn’t rule it out on Halfords verdict

I'd suggest a check to see if the Ctek is charging when it shouldnt, check the Ctek ignition cable is wired correctly (ie to an ignition-switched pos, DIN72552 terminal 15).
If it is charging the leisure battery when the engine is off, either through a fault or mis-wiring, that would account for the starter battery draining quickly - all B2Bs take significantly more current at the input than the leisure battery charge current.
As a simple test you could pull the Ctek input fuse and see if the starter battery stays up over a few days.
Cheers
Phil
